The Journey Home Refuge Center is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) serving individuals experiencing homelessness and crisis in Big Spring, Texas. Since 2021, our mission has extended beyond providing temporary shelter. We meet people in crisis, address their immediate needs, and help create a pathway toward safety, stability and self-sufficiency.
Over the past five years, Journey Home has provided emergency intervention to more than 300 individuals and funded nearly 500 nights of emergency motel shelter. Approximately 70 of those we have served have been veterans. Our volunteers provide emergency shelter, meals, clothing, transportation, and connections to medical care, employment, education, recovery resources and long-term housing. We also work alongside local agencies and community organizations because homelessness cannot be addressed by one organization alone.
Brenden M.’s story demonstrates our mission in action. Brenden, a veteran, found himself homeless and without a safe place to stay. Journey Home secured emergency shelter for him, then assisted with transportation to Abilene, where he entered the ACT truck-driving program. Brenden gained a marketable skill set and a pathway toward independence and is now doing well. One night of safety became an opportunity for a new direction in life.
In another case, a city official contacted Journey Home concerning Anthony M., an unhoused amputee who was seriously ill and exposed to cold, rainy weather. Our volunteers helped connect Anthony with emergency medical care and provided shelter, clothing and other necessities. Today, Anthony is safely housed in a local nursing facility where his ongoing needs can be met.
These stories demonstrate why Journey Home is working to complete our next major step: a four-bed men’s transitional housing facility.
