South Oakland Citizens for the Homeless kicked off their summer program/cooling shelter on May 5th. We'll be collecting the following essential items in the narthex to help support their guests until July 5th:
- Feminine hygiene pads
- Coffee
- Travel-size deodorant
- Travel-size shampoo, conditioner, and body wash
- Kool-Aid mix (with sugar)
- Deodorizing body wipes

Every item will be going to use to support those in need in our community! Please contact [email protected] with any questions.

What a joyful celebration we shared on Sunday, May 17th as we marked the 75th Anniversary of our congregation. It was a true blessing to welcome 30 visitors with deep ties to our church, whose presence added to the richness of the day. The festive Divine Service lifted our hearts with the sounds of brass, choir, and bell choir, and we were grateful for Bishop Miskus’ proclamation that the faithfulness and steadfast love of the Lord endure forever.

The celebration continued with a wonderful time of food and fellowship, enjoyed by all who stayed. We extend our sincere thanks to everyone who contributed their time and effort in planning, setting up, and cleaning up for this milestone event. As we give thanks for the past 75 years, we pray that God will continue to pour out His abundant blessings upon our congregation, guiding us to walk by faith and shine His light into the world.

There's still time to join us this Memorial Day as we walk in the Beverly Hills parade and pass out flags along the parade route! We'll meet at Groves High School at 10:45 AM - look for Michael Florio's shiny red pickup truck! There is a signup sheet outside of the fellowship hall.

Please consider serving with the Human Care team at Ascension of Christ!

The Human Care Team coordinates and assists with the congregation’s corporate work of mercy in the congregation, community and globally. During the recent Ascension All-Teams Planning Meeting held on April 18, 2026, each team discussed ideas and plans for the 2026 year. Some ideas that our team discussed include:
- Care Program for Congregation Seniors, connecting with assistance organizations, guest speaker programs, social events
- Gifts for All God’s Children - Fundraising Dinner (Christmas in July) participation, Christmas Gifts (Angel Tree)
- Care Net - Detroit Zoo Walk, Baby Bottle Boomerang, Fundraising Gala
- Peace Lutheran Detroit Support Partnership - Drives for Pantry, Turkeys, Clothing
- Warming Center Support - South Oakland Citizens for Homelessness (SOCH) Welcome Inn Day Shelter
- Seminary Support
- LCMS Guided Bible Study topics for Christian-Focused Discussions
- Camp Restore Detroit - Presentation to Congregation and volunteer opportunities

Please consider serving with the Christian Education Team here at Ascension of Christ!

The Christian Education team oversees programming from preschoolers to adults. In addition to the weekly Sunday Bible study, the adults have a twice-a-month Thursday morning study. We have one Sunday School class ages 3 to 10 and two Catechism classes, all which meet on Sundays after the Divine Service. Our students serve within our building in the Acolyte program, participate in Breakfast in Bethlehem and the Christmas program, beautify our narthex with Easter banners, cooking and serve Easter breakfast, and assist with VBS. The Human Care Team graciously gives our students opportunities to serve in ways that go beyond the walls of our church. We have chaperoned our teens at the Higher Things youth conferences for the past two summers and look forward to attending more in the future. We host monthly family game nights, free of charge, as well as the annual Chili cook-off and trivia fundraising event. Upcoming event dates are Family Faith & Fun Potluck on May 30th and VBS 6/13-14.
