Why a train? Because President Grove Cleveland declared the first Labor Day in an attempt to end a railroad workers strike.

Jewish history in the US is closely entwined with the fight for workers rights. In old pictures of workers on strike, you can sometimes see signs in Yiddish among the workers, demanding fair wages, decent treatment, and many other things.

Ironically, today the workers most likely to be exploited are also the least likely to have the day off. Retail workers, agricultural workers, teaching adjuncts, and others work today without many of the protections the unions fought so hard for over a century ago.
