Blessed János Brenner, O.Cist
1931-1957 Martyr under the Hungarian Communist Regime

Around midnight on 15 December, 1957 (Brenner was preparing his sermon for 16 December) he was called to give last rites to a supposedly ill man in a neighboring town; he failed to realize that it was a trap.[3] The 17-year-old boy who summoned him had been known to Brenner as an altar server. The young priest took anointing oils and the Eucharist with him in his bag. He was soon ambushed in the woods and stabbed 32 times. He was found dead that morning, earning him the title "Hungarian Tarcisius," since that martyr had died in similar circumstances.

Epiphanytide

O GOD, who by the leading of a star didst manifest thy only-begotten Son to the Gentiles: Mercifully grant, that we, which know thee now by faith, may after this life have the fruition of thy glorious Godhead; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Solemnity of the Sacred Heart

Almighty God and Father,
we glory in the Sacred Heart of Jesus, your beloved Son,
as we call to mind the great things his love has done for us.
Fill us with the grace that flows in abundance
from the Heart of Jesus, the source of heaven’s gifts.
Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

June 3 - Happy Feast Day St. Charles Lwanga and Companion

Saint Charles Lwanga and his companions are celebrated as martyrs who bravely upheld their Christian faith amidst persecution in Uganda. Their story is a poignant reminder of the power of faith and the strength found in unity and purity.

Charles Lwanga was born in the kingdom of Buganda (modern-day Uganda) around 1860. He served as a page in the court of King Mwanga II. During this time, Christian missionaries were actively evangelizing in the region, and Charles, along with many other young men at the court, converted to Christianity. Charles was baptized on November 15, 1885, by Father Giraud, a Catholic missionary.

King Mwanga II, initially tolerant of Christianity, turned hostile as he perceived the new faith as a threat to his authority. He was particularly angered by the Christians’ resistance to his immoral demands, including his attempts to coerce the young pages into sinful acts. Charles, a catechist, became a protector and leader to the younger converts, guiding them in their faith and encouraging them to resist the king’s advances.

In May 1886, Mwanga’s rage culminated in a brutal crackdown on Christians. Charles and his companions were arrested and condemned to death for their faith. On June 3, 1886, Charles was burned alive at Namugongo. He and 21 other Catholic and Anglican converts were martyred for their unwavering commitment to Christ. Their deaths sowed the seeds of faith in Uganda, leading to a significant growth of Christianity in the region.

Let us Pray,
Grant, we beseech thee, Almighty God, that just as we do believe thine Only-Begotten Son, our Saviour, to have this day ascended into the heavens, so we may also in heart and mind thither ascend, and with Him continually dwell.
Through the same Jesus Christ, thy Son, Our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end.
℟. Amen.
