The truth is that life on many fronts can be difficult, and when it’s really hard, the difficulties can cause us to despair or even lose hope. How do we avoid that? Is it possible to live in the midst of the brokenness of a fallen and falling world and still rejoice? Is it possible to have hope in the midst of suffering? Paul answers these questions in our passage in Romans. Today, I want to talk about a hope that does not disappoint.

Romans 5:3-5 (ESV) Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame (NASB: hope does not disappoint), because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

Richard from Pittsfield, Illinois, knew the grueling reality of the justice system all too well after spending 29 years going in and out of prison. We're pleased to welcome Dave Limmer from Casper, Wyoming, who is doing a training for our ministry staff today. There are many more facets to recovery than just getting sober. In this series on "Training in Discipleship" Dave discusses walking people through practical inner healing tools—recognizing hurt versus sinful responses, forgiveness, breaking soul ties and generational patterns, and identifying "open doors" that leave people vulnerable to spiritual bo***ge. The session will close with topics on identity in Christ, the power of words and faith, and overcoming shame—helping people embrace their identity as beloved sons and daughters of God.

This morning, we have the joyful privilege of baptizing several people. To help us understand what we’re doing, let’s look at the story in the Book of Acts about Phillip and the Ethiopian eu**ch. In this story, after hearing the gospel, the eu**ch says, “See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?” That’s a great question, and the answer helps us understand what baptism is all about and why it’s so important.

Acts 8:35-39 (ESV) Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this Scripture he told him the good news about Jesus. 36 And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eu**ch said, “See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?” 38 And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eu**ch, and he baptized him. 39 And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord carried Philip away, and the eu**ch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing.
