Public art is a powerful way to promote a community, support economic development, and create a sense of place.

In Bethel, public art helps attract visitors, encourage exploration of local businesses, and add to the character and vibrancy of our downtown and community spaces.

Along with this piece, Bethel is home to five permanent sculptures and seven temporary sculptures through Bethel Arts programs, including the Arts in View program, creating an outdoor and community-wide art experience for residents and visitors to enjoy throughout town.

Barnum was born and raised in Bethel. The 23-foot-long piece was painted by artist Brechin Morgan in 1989. He was inspired to create the artwork after reading a series of books about Barnum, including his two autobiographies.
