Come to me, all you that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28)
As we approach Memorial Day and visit the cemeteries where so many family members and friends are resting, for me it brings to mind the years past when it was the family tradition to visit many different cemeteries in the county. We would take Mom's fresh cut flowers from peony bushes or irises. We would usually take coffee cans or large food cans with the tops cut out, place the flowers in them, and add the water which we had brought with us from home. Mom would always bring her small broom and a cloth to sweep off and wash down the stones. There were usually family and friends at the cemeteries also, so frequently it meant seeing people we might not have seen for a while. Then times changed and artificial flowers became more prominent. They didn't have to have water and yet they lasted so much longer. We would still run into people to talk to and catch up on friends and relatives. But nothing will replace those long ago memories of the family tradition.
As you celebrate the Memorial Day holiday and weekend, may your time be filled with some sweet thoughts and memories of those from your past.
If the Matkins Cemetery happens to be one from your past, and should you leave a wreath or bouquet, we would remind you that these items will be removed July 1 to make mowing easier for our caretakers. Also the donation box will still be there if you would like to help with the expenses of upkeep. Or if you choose to and prefer to mail a donation the address is: Matkins Cemetery Fund, C/O BTC Bank, 3606 Miller St., Bethany, MO 64424

Spring has arrived ! And what a crazy season it is starting out to be! Going from one extreme to another -- 90 degree days to frost warnings in just a matter of hours! Regardless, all the rain and warm temperatures are really making the grass grow.
We are thankful for those who help keep this little country cemetery going. Bill Clark will be mowing again this year. Also a big thank you to Randy Jennings for tree clean up. Thank you to those who serve on the board to work hard making the decisions required to hold it all together.

There's no reason to be the richest man in the cemetery. You can't do any business from there. ---- Colonel Sanders

We are fast approaching another Memorial Day, the day set aside to pay honor and mourning to loved ones. More than a half dozen places have claimed to be the birthplace of the holiday.

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, began during the American Civil War when citizens placed flowers on the graves of those who had been killed in battle. After World War I, it came to be observed in honor of those who had died in all U.S. wars, and its name changed to Memorial Day.

As you celebrate the holiday this year, many of us by getting a 3-day weekend and gathering with family and friends for the beginning of summer - please remember the cemeteries. Many will be freshly mowed and cared for. Remember that it is not just a one week job, but a continuing job throughout the summer. Grass needs mowed, stones need repaired, etc.

This is just a reminder that if you can, please consider including us in your charitable giving. We appreciate all donations to help us care for this sacred place. They may be sent to: Matkins Cemetery Fund, C/O BTC Bank, 3606 Miller St., Bethany, MO 64424

(Borrowed picture and quote)
“The cemetery is an open space among the ruins, covered in winter with violets and daisies. It might make one in love with death, to think that one should be buried in so sweet a place.”
Percy Bysshe Shelley
Although winter weather seems to try to hang on a little longer this year, we know spring will be arriving. Soon the artificial flowers will be joined by green grass and colorful blooms. As we prepare for the spring and summer mowing season, we hope you will consider including us in your charitable giving. We appreciate all donations to help us care for this “sweet place.” They may be sent to: Matkins Cemetery Fund, C/O BTC Bank, 3606 Miller St., Bethany, MO 64424

Fall has arrived and we are about ready to call it a season as far as mowing and upkeep goes. This year we hired the mowing done and we were blessed to have enough donations to cover that expense. We also did not require any grave stone repairs this year. We are anticipating that mowing expenses may increase for next year. Please keep us in mind when planning your charitable giving. We appreciate all donations. They may be sent to: Matkins Cemetery Fund, C/O BTC Bank, 3606 Miller St., Bethany, MO 64424

We held our meeting on Sunday at the cemetery. Minutes of last year's meeting were read, and the financial report was given.
A quote was also presented for repairs to 11 stones in the amount of $975. It was decided that we will work on getting the worst repaired now and postpone repairs for others to a later time.
We will be posting a sign to let people know that flowers will be removed by July 1st to simplify mowing and trimming.
We voted to try and contact someone to help with mowing and trimming.
We set a date for a work day at the cemetery for May 17 at 1:00 p.m. Anyone interested in helping is welcome.
We want to give special thanks to Christie and LaKota Allen for the donation of a new American flag.
As you can see, keeping the cemetery in good shape is an expensive job. We would appreciate any donations toward maintenance and upkeep. They can be sent to: --
