Come to me, all you that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28)
As we approach Memorial Day and visit the cemeteries where so many family members and friends are resting, for me it brings to mind the years past when it was the family tradition to visit many different cemeteries in the county. We would take Mom's fresh cut flowers from peony bushes or irises. We would usually take coffee cans or large food cans with the tops cut out, place the flowers in them, and add the water which we had brought with us from home. Mom would always bring her small broom and a cloth to sweep off and wash down the stones. There were usually family and friends at the cemeteries also, so frequently it meant seeing people we might not have seen for a while. Then times changed and artificial flowers became more prominent. They didn't have to have water and yet they lasted so much longer. We would still run into people to talk to and catch up on friends and relatives. But nothing will replace those long ago memories of the family tradition.
As you celebrate the Memorial Day holiday and weekend, may your time be filled with some sweet thoughts and memories of those from your past.
If the Matkins Cemetery happens to be one from your past, and should you leave a wreath or bouquet, we would remind you that these items will be removed July 1 to make mowing easier for our caretakers. Also the donation box will still be there if you would like to help with the expenses of upkeep. Or if you choose to and prefer to mail a donation the address is: Matkins Cemetery Fund, C/O BTC Bank, 3606 Miller St., Bethany, MO 64424
