Senator Priscilla Dunn (October 8, 1943 β September 17, 2024) was a trailblazer whose life of service left a lasting impact on Bessemer and beyond.
She became the first African American woman elected to represent District 19 in the Alabama State Senate, serving with dedication and distinction for many years. Her commitment to public service was matched by her passion for education, devoting more than 30 years to the Bessemer City School System and an additional 10 years as a Homeless Education Coordinator β ensuring students facing hardship had the support they needed to succeed.
Beyond elected office, Senator Dunnβs leadership extended throughout the community. She served on numerous boards and organizations, championing education, civic engagement, and opportunities for others. A woman of faith and a lifelong member of Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church, her life reflected service, perseverance, and commitment to uplifting others.
This Womenβs History Month, we honor Senator Dunnβs legacy and the example she set through leadership, education, and unwavering dedication to her community.
