First United Methodist Church, Bessemer City not just a church in the community, but a church FOR the community. First UMC has a rich legacy - a church seeking and telling God's old story in new ways.

Around 1890 John Askey Smith and his wife Fannie Pinchback Smith moved to the area known presently as Bessemer City. After having the 1,700 acres of purchased land surveyed, Smith set aside one lot on the East side at the foot of Whetstone Mountain (110 South Inman Avenue) where he built a Methodist Church for his wife, she being a devout Christian. ween 1902 - 1904 in the hybrid styles of renaissance Gothic and 19th century Victorian (renovated in 1987) stands at 110 West Alabama Avenue. In 1945, the S.J. Durhams gave the church a lot adjoining its property. To honor that gift the church changed its name to J.M. Odell Memorial in memory of Mrs. Durham's father. The name was changed to First United Methodist Church in 1969 following the unification of the Methodist and E.U.B Churches. Today, First United Methodist Church stands on the foundation of a rich history, empowered by the Holy Spirit, that it may seek God's will today to heal, help, and transform lives in the direction of the Kingdom of God.
