THE IMPORTANCE OF SEPARATION BETWEEN CHURCH AND STATE

Legislating religious morality has historically led to abuse of power, driven by diverse interpretations of biblical concepts. This phenomenon underscores the crucial need to understand the lessons from history, particularly regarding the union of Church and State. Why did Europeans migrate to the New World, leaving behind their homes to venture into the undeveloped forests of a strange land?

CHURCH AND STATE ATROCITIES

One poignant historical example of the union of church and state leading to abuse of power is the Spanish Inquisition. Established in 1478 by Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile, the Spanish Inquisition aimed to enforce Catholic orthodoxy. This initiative granted sweeping powers to investigate, try, and punish those accused of heresy, including converted Jews and Muslims suspected of practicing their former faiths in secret. The methods employed were often brutal, involving torture, property confiscation, and ex*****on by burning at the stake. This union of church and state resulted in widespread fear, injustice, and suffering, illustrating the perils of combining religious authority with governmental power.

THE SEARCH FOR RELIGIOUS LIBERTY

The Pilgrims departed Europe primarily in pursuit of religious freedom. In England, they faced persecution for their separatist beliefs that diverged from the practices of the Church of England. Initially relocating to the Netherlands, they later sought a new haven, driven by concerns over cultural identity and economic challenges.

Boarding the Mayflower in 1620, the Pilgrims sailed for America with the intent to establish a community where they could worship freely and build a society founded on their religious principles. This quest for religious liberty served as a foundational motivation for their journey to the New World.

TROUBLE IN THE NEW WORLD

Many today, suffering from historical amnesia, mistakenly believe that our nation was founded solely on religious principles. In reality, while the pursuit of religious freedom propelled many to the New World, Puritan Christians repeated the error of legislating religious beliefs.

Roger Williams sought refuge in Rhode Island to escape persecution for his unorthodox views on religious freedom and separation of church and state. A Puritan minister, Williams advocated for civil authorities to refrain from controlling religious matters and championed the freedom for individuals to practice their faith without interference. His principles led to his expulsion from the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1635. Establishing Providence in 1636, Williams created a community that welcomed individuals of all religious backgrounds, thereby pioneering an unprecedented level of religious tolerance and freedom.

RELIGIOUS PLURALITY IN THE ORIGINAL 13 COLONIES

The original 13 colonies cultivated a culture of religious plurality due to the diverse beliefs and practices of their settlers. Unlike European counterparts enforcing state religions and religious conformity, the colonies were established by groups seeking various forms of religious freedom and tolerance rather than religious uniformity dictated by the state.

Examples include:
- Virginia: Founded by Anglicans pursuing economic opportunities, welcoming settlers of diverse Christian denominations to freely practice their faith.
- Massachusetts: Initially settled by Puritans seeking religious autonomy from England's Anglican Church, subsequently attracting groups advocating for religious liberty.
- Maryland: Established by Catholics fleeing Protestant persecution in England, ultimately adopting policies of religious tolerance.

The colonies' diverse religious motivations and absence of a singular religious authority facilitated the development of a society where different religious groups coexisted and influenced each other, laying the groundwork for religious plurality.

WILL HISTORY REPEAT ITSELF TODAY?

The recent mandates in Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana requiring the Bible's inclusion in public school curricula raise constitutional concerns. Such directives risk violating the separation of church and state as enshrined in the United States Constitution.

As a Christian, understanding the importance of upholding separation between church and state is paramount, especially in light of historical lessons. Here's why:

1. Protecting Religious Freedom: The separation ensures that individuals of all faiths, including Christians, can practice their religion freely without government interference or favoritism.

2. Preventing Religious Coercion: History demonstrates that government alignment with a specific religion can lead to coercion, discrimination, and persecution of religious minorities or dissenting factions within that religion.

3. Preserving Government Neutrality: Government neutrality on religious matters promotes equity among citizens of diverse religious beliefs and non-believers, enabling the government to focus on secular issues affecting all citizens.

4. Fostering Social Harmony: In a culturally diverse nation like the United States, maintaining separation minimizes religious disputes and their impact on public policy and governance.

5. Respecting Pluralism: Acknowledging the diversity of beliefs and values fosters mutual respect and understanding among individuals from varying faiths and philosophical backgrounds.

In conclusion, upholding separation between church and state safeguards religious freedom, mitigates discrimination, promotes government impartiality, fosters societal harmony, and honors the diversity of beliefs in our society—all vital lessons gleaned from history.

THE WORD: “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6, NIV

Hope you had a very Merry Christmas 2023!

REFLECTION: All of our conflicts, wars, crimes, prejudices, inequalities, and broken relationships are the result of sin. Our misunderstanding of God’s love and our mandate to be ambassadors of His love to all of humanity is what complicates matters. We have a misconception of our mission on Earth.

Christians have not been called to become religious activists but ambassadors of reconciliation. We have been commanded to be living witnesses of Jesus’s love for humanity, for He is the Prince of Peace.

The mandate of Christians is not to support a particular political party in order to transform an earthly nation into a righteous nation, for no nation on this sinful planet will ever again replace the theocracy of ancient Israel. Jesus will be crowned King of the universe, and His government will be like no other government on Earth.

God, who is the Victim of our disobedience, has not entrusted us to His seat of judgment but through Christ, we sit at His right hand, for He is our Creator, our Savior, our Lord, and our Advocate on behalf of all humanity.

THE WORD: “If anyone boasts, 'I love God,' and goes right on hating his brother or sister, thinking nothing of it, he is a liar. If he won’t love the person he can see, how can he love the God he can’t see? The command we have from Christ is blunt: Loving God includes loving people. You’ve got to love both.”

THE WORD:
Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.
