“Be exalted, O God, above the heavens! Let your glory be over all the earth!” Psalm 57:5, 11.
This Psalm was written when David fled from Saul and was hiding in a cave. However, David knew the cave could provide him little protection against this powerful monarch, thus he declares: "In you my soul takes refuge" (v. 1). How often we tend to trust in our finances, power and status rather than God to keep us from harm! But what’s most remarkable about this psalm is that even though David is been unfairly persecuted, exiled, and condemned to die, his main concern (above his own safety), is the glory of God. He states twice, in the middle and the end of the psalm, "Be exalted, O God, above the heavens! Let your glory be over all the earth!" (vv. 5, 11). The placement and repetition of these two statements indicates that this is the major thrust of this psalm. This is David's deepest desire in this dark moment: the exaltation of God. As long as God is exalted, all will be well. As long as He is revealed in my actions, lifted up in what I say, and honored in my life, I can rest assured that He will take charge of my wellbeing.
