Prayer for today -
The times we live in are perilous Lord and we are sometimes dismayed and confused. We pray for a world that desires peace, and for an end to the plague of war. We pray for all those in harm's way. With sadness we know that when wars end, what is left is only the destruction and the sorrow that remains forever. We pray that peace may come sooner instead of later, so that lives will be saved.
We pray for those who are anxious and worried about others today, just hoping they are alright, and also for those who are grieving. Be with them Lord. We pray for those who are injured and those who are in hospital beds. Be with them Lord. We pray for those within our own family too who are struggling. Be with them.
In all moments of this life, and in all things either good or bad, give us also faith to trust in your love and mercy and grace. Amen.

The story I often call to mind on Ash Wednesday is from the Book of Jonah chapter 3, vs 6-10.
6 When Jonah’s warning reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust. 7 This is the proclamation he issued in Nineveh:
“By the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let people or animals, herds or flocks, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink. 8 But let people and animals be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence. 9 Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish.” 10 When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened.
It is not just individuals for whom this day should be a call to repentance, but nations too. Would that we the people might heed the warning and resolve together to call urgently on God, and resolve to give up our evil ways and our violence, and to follow the Christ and love one another as we should.

IT'S TRANSFIGURATION DAY!

The story is told in all three gospels, of how they saw Jesus on the mountaintop surrounded by an unearthly glow and speaking with Moses and Elijah, and how that moment ended when a voice spoke to them from heaven. Then they walked down the hill and went back to doing what they had been doing, but they knew now that Jesus was way more than what he appeared to be.
It is hard to imagine what was going through their minds after that. Mountaintop experiences are great, but sooner or later they always lead us back down to those places where ministry can happen. The same is true of our weekly worship time together. It prepares us to be better persons and to serve the Lord in the valleys where we live.
There is a prayer by Safiyah Fosua in The Africana Worship Book that captured this idea very well. It read in part,

Lord of the Mountaintop, God of dazzling clothes,
Be with us when we come down from the height of worship
To face a world
That didn’t see what we just saw in you.
Show us what to do.

OUR PRAYER THIS MORNING -
Lord, we want to talk to you about this God and country stuff. Help us to keep that straight. Remind us that we are the best we can be as a nation only when we are a nation under God, not when we are playing God. Humble us Lord if you must, but then help us rise and do better in your name. Bless your church too, and us as long as you are at it, and help us rise and be bold in our proclamation that you are Lord. Teach us your ways and repeat them again as often as necessary until your ways become our ways too. Help us love one another and the stranger in our midst and our enemies too, with all the love and mercy that we have experienced in Christ Jesus. Make us if you can indistinguishable in name and purpose from Him, so that we may not just follow Jesus blindly, but willingly give our all, and let our glory be all the cross. AMEN!
