First Church Berkeley

First Church Berkeley A progressive, welcoming congregation located near the UC Berkeley campus that serves the entire East Bay. First Church Berkeley. So many syllables! or FCCB.

AKA First Congregational Church of Berkeley, CA, United Church of Christ. First Church for short. Or Home. We are people who may have been brought up in other faith traditions or none at all. We are people of different ages and styles of life. We are people of different races, including multi-racial families. Our families are different shapes and sizes and include singles, significant others, and

those who have lost partners or spouses. Some of us have children, some of us don’t, some of us are children. We respect other faith traditions, and some of our families are interfaith. We are all over the map politically (but we are located in Berkeley!). We are free to wrestle theologically. We take care of each other. We like to think and exchange ideas and opinions. We value creativity and use the arts in many ways in the life of the church.

“Sometimes what unsettles us most is not God’s judgment, but God’s compassion. Mercy is the refusal to give up on someone’s humanity. Can we live with a God whose mercy is bigger than our comfort? Can we trust and participate with a God who refuses to draw the lines where we would draw them? Can we sit in a story that doesn’t resolve cleanly? Because maybe the invitation isn’t to solve the tension, but to stay in it, to let it stretch us and challenge the limits of our compassion? Amen.” - Rev Hannah Turner

We're theming our Pride Month around this wonderful podcast which just won a Peabody Award--"When We All Get to Heaven" focuses on the story of the Metropolitan Community Church in San Francisco as they grappled with the AIDS crisis and all it meant to be a q***r church in a world that rejected and feared q***rness. We'll wrestle with the stories all month and remember those we lost in that time, and we'll learn lessons we can apply to the crises we face today as a church facing a world on fire around us. Plus we'll welcome a square of the AIDS memorial quilt to our sanctuary for the month, and Rev. Jim Mitulski will join us as our guest preacher on June 28th at the end of the month of celebration and remembrance!

When We All Get to Heaven is an audio documentary that follows a group of LGBTQ Christians trying to make sense of the widespread illness and death during the '80s AIDS crisis, all while caught between a faith that rejected their sexual identity and a gay rights movement that rejected God.

For diving into the messy, human complexities of the past and recognizing the ways that faith can heal as well as hurt, When We All Get to Heaven is a . ✨

Some powerful and heartfelt words from Rev. Dr. Kelly’s Mother’s Day sermon this Sunday:

“So today on Mother’s Day, if you had a loving mother who raised you, then thank God for that.
And I hope, in the name of Anna Jarvis, you follow her instructions and write her a handwritten letter about it.
If you are a mother yourself, I hope you are loved and cherished today. If this day is painful for you, if you needed more from your own mothering than you got, if you’re grieving today, if you’re longing for a child today, if you’re worrying about your child today, if today is a hard day, I pray that the Holy Spirit comes alongside you and lifts you up. And that the rest of your community remembers our own ability to be paracletes for one another as well. Amen.”
