The Burning Globe

The Burning Globe A reimagined Globe Theatre on Playa filled with people speaking with joy, passion, abandon, imagination, irreverence, humor and pathos.

In August of 2015, I drove out to the playa for the first time for the Golden Spike ceremony. I found myself standing alone facing the Razorback as a dust storm rolled in. Standing with my arms outstretched, feeling the grains of sand softly blast, my body leaning into the wind, feeling epic and minuscule at the same time, I heard myself say, “To Be or Not to Be, that is the Question.” “Blow winds

and crack your cheeks!,” was my next thought. This project is born of that moment. This installation draws upon the experiences I and the other actor/teachers have had introducing people from all ages, races, backgrounds to the transformational alchemy of Shakespeare’s language. We do not believe there is a right way just the way that brings the words, speaker and audience to life. It is a world in which the player gets to encounter who they are and who they might be. Everything they need is within themselves and as they breathe their life into the text it comes alive as if for the first time. This language is for everyone as it holds the sacred and the profane, the ridiculous and sublime. It asks big questions about the human experience in all its complexity and invites the speaker to commit body, voice, heart, and soul to the moment. And it is enormously fun. To get up on a stage and say to a group of friends and strangers under a wide desert sky, “We are such stuff as dreams are made of and our little life is rounded with a sleep ” transforms you and all those listening.

Camp The Burning Globe is looking for a few more campers to join our troupe. We are an interactive theatre camp with a stage, an aerial rig, Shakespeare tarot bar, art car, DND fantasy speakeasy, and solar power. We are located at 8:30 and A. Dues are $250-$350. We have tent shade, a solar shower and kitchen but no meal plan. We are looking for participants who are hard working and interested in interactive theatre on the playa. Performance experience welcome but not required. We are especially looking for extra help during build week and have some work access passes for those who can committ.

Hello all:

I have some exciting news. In our commitment to creating a re-imagined Globe theatre, the Burning Globe is now adding an aerial truss to our stage. We are collaborating with several aerial and suspension artists to add a fourth dimension to our Globe stage and we are really excited. This means that witches, fairies and perhaps even Romeo can now truly transcend and fly. I think Shakespeare would be thrilled.

In addition to creating our aerial/text piece based on ritual in Macbeth, we will be hosting other artists with pieces ranging from shadow play ghost stories, the Playa a ca****la choir, clown pieces, dance pieces, workshops of various plays in progress and daily voice/movement workshops.

Our camp has grown to twenty members and we are working hard reinforcing stages, painting backdrops, designing shade structures, and building benches and a portable stage. We are so thankful to those that have already given. And we still need your help. We are looking for every way possible to cut costs, and members are all donating money and time. Thus far, we have raised $2000 between the Indiegogo campaign and camp member donations. In the next two weeks, we need to raise at least another $3,000 to cover our base costs.

So if you can, please donate. If we can get 120 people to just give $25, we will make it. If you can do more than that, it would be amazing. There are some fun perks. Here is the Indiegogo link.
