Holy Rage, Sacred Grief, Fearless Joy -
Practices for Moving from Survival
to Engagement in Dark Times
The times are dark. We know there is work for us to do, but confronting the pain of the world can take a moral and emotional toll that undermines our well-being and limits our effectiveness. Avoiding our grief and anger out of fear that they will be too painful or will paralyze us requires emotional numbing that saps our joy and can lead to cynicism, despair, burnout, or worse. Join climate justice Lawyer and interfaith chaplain Martin Wagner to experience some simple practices for holding hard emotions and rediscovering joy in hard times.
Martin Wagner developed his understanding of the moral, emotional, and spiritual toll of activism during several decades working as a human rights and climate lawyer, including 28 years as creator and managing attorney of Earthjustice’s International Program. He is currently an interfaith chaplain serving activists and movements for environmental and human justice. Among other influences, Martin’s work draws on his longtime study and friendship with scholar, author, and activist Joanna Macy, Ph.D., whose Work that Reconnects is a powerful resource for transforming anger, despair, and overwhelm into inspired collaborative action.

Intro to "Stress Reduction Sound Bath"

Sunday, March 9th

12:00 - 1:00pm after coffee hour in the chapel

Musicians and Sound Healers Mind Body Sound Collective will showcase their Sound Healing musical offering for our members and friends.

This will be a meditation and sound healing offering deep relaxation and stress relief. Let the soothing vibrations of healing music guide you into a state of peace, balance, and renewal by engaging the body’s natural healing response.

Experience the profound benefits of sound baths, which have been shown to reduce stress, calm the nervous system, ease pain and tension, promote restorative sleep, and promote deep relaxation by engaging the body’s natural healing response. The rich vibrations of crystal singing bowls, bells, shamanic drums, steel hand pan drums, acoustic guitar, and more create a sonic landscape that soothes the mind and body.

Going forward these Sound Baths will be offered

2nd Thursdays @7:30pm in our chapel beginning April 10th.

They will be open to the public and Northbrae members will receive a discount. Northbrae Member price will be $30 and non-member price is $45.

Today's Service - Celebrating Black History Month
Readings:

Readings:

“Forged out of slavery, the black church was also a place of
protection and practicality. For many decades it was one of the few places Black people could gather for educational purposes, to arrange mutual aid groups, or to form political organizations. As a result, it has always been a target. As an independent institution operating free of white control and oversight, the Black church had inherent revolutionary potential that often made it an object of white fear and anger.”

Nikole Hannah-Jones, the 1619 Project

Ubuntu is an ancient African word meaning 'humanity to others'. It is often described as reminding us that 'I am what I am because of who we all are'.

“Ubuntu is very difficult to render into a Western language. It speaks of the very essence of being human… you are generous, you are hospitable, you are friendly and caring and compassionate. You share what you have. It is to say, “My humanity is caught up, is inextricably bound up, in yours.” We belong in a bundle of life. We say, “A person is a person through other persons.” It is not, “I think therefore I am.” It says rather: “I am human because I belong. I participate; I share.”

Desmond Tutu, No Future Without Forgiveness

“There is no longer Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in the Spirit.”

Galatians 3:28

Northbrae Community Church is excited to host special guest, Betsy Rose to lead our service this Sunday, May 5th. Here is a brief description of Betsy's work:

Betsy Rose’s new music and writings are inspired by the spirit of Leonard Bernstein's statement after the assassination of JFK: " This will be our reply to violence- to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before."

Her songs, reflections and poetry speak to this time of disruption, loss, fear and confusion, in our own culture and around the world.

From celebratory to grieving to faithful and grounded, Betsy’s sings of the fear, grief, anger, despair, joy, love, trust, and passion that weave through our hearts as we face an unstable present and an unknown future together.
