Isaiah 40 is a declaration of comfort to God's people in their distress. Here God promises that the word of judgment in exile is not His final word. For those who look to Him for deliverance, He promises an end to warfare and forgiveness of sins. He gives assurances of these promises because He is a powerful king who marches over hill and valley, and His word stands firm even though all else fades away. And best of all, the Lord is a tenderhearted Shepherd who lovingly cares for even the weakest of His sheep because He knows their every need. These promises are much greater than the initial fulfillment of a return from the Babylonian exile. In the words of Barry Webb:
The gospel of Jesus Christ is the gospel of Isaiah 40 transposed into a new, higher key.
This message brings the greatest comfort and is worth singing about and declaring to the world!
