As I was reading 2 Corinthians 5, I found myself asking, How do we keep the love of Christ controlling us? Then I noticed that Paul answers the question in the very next verse.

“The love of Christ controls us…” (2 Corinthians 5:14). How? “That those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised” (2 Corinthians 5:15).

I don’t remain under the control of Christ’s love by simply trying harder. I remain there by remembering the cross and choosing each day to live for the One who died and rose again for me. The more I fix my heart on what Jesus has done, the less I want to live for myself and the more I want to live for him.

Perhaps that is the secret Paul discovered: the cross not only saves us, it continually redirects us. When we keep our eyes on Jesus, his love continues to shape the way we live.

As I reflected on Jesus washing the disciples’ feet in John 13, one verse especially stood out to me: “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean” (John 13:10). Jesus was doing more than washing dusty feet. He was reminding his disciples that those who belong to him have already been made clean.

That is a comforting thought. I don’t have to earn my salvation all over again every time I fail. Christ has already made me clean. But as I walk through this broken world, the dust of daily life still clings to me. My attitudes, words, and actions sometimes need the cleansing that only comes through confession, repentance, and renewed fellowship with him.

I’m grateful that Jesus doesn’t cast me aside because my feet get dirty. Instead, he lovingly invites me to come to him again and again. My standing before God rests on his finished work, while his grace continually renews my daily walk.

Today, I’m thankful for a Savior who not only cleansed me once for all, but who still stoops to wash the dust from my feet.

Saturday is a wonderful time to begin preparing your heart for Sunday. It’s never too early to get ready to gather with God’s people.

Pray for your pastor as he prepares to preach. Pray for those leading in worship. Pray for the people who will walk through the church doors carrying burdens that few others know about. Ask the Lord to prepare your own heart to hear his Word with humility, faith, and obedience.

Don’t just plan to attend worship tomorrow. Begin preparing for it today.

The direction of our gaze often determines the direction of our hearts.

Our hope is not found in our strength, our circumstances, or even our consistency. It is found in Christ alone. Jesus promises that everyone who looks to him in faith has eternal life and the sure hope of resurrection. We don’t merely begin the Christian life by looking to Jesus; we continue by fixing our eyes on him every day until faith becomes sight.

Lord Jesus, today and every day, I look to you. Strengthen my faith, keep my eyes fixed on you, and remind me that my hope is secure because of your promise. Thank you for the gift of eternal life and the assurance that one day you will raise all who belong to you. Amen.
