Oh Lord, like many people in the Bible, we think we are spiritually fine. We don't look at ourselves and see our sins. We think of you as a good friend that accepts us as we are and laughs at our sins rather than the true God who hates sin and destroys evil. You tell us that you came to people who are sick in sin, not well in the way they think about themselves. You came to seek and to save the lost, not pat those on the back who think they have it figured out. Help us to see our sins for what they are and repent of them. Be the doctor who comes to heal our brokenness and bring us the life in Jesus that we need.

Oh Lord, sometimes we minimize you, sometimes we change what you say, sometimes we know what you say, we just throw it out because we don't like it. Help us to see that we are not just ignoring an opinion or choosing the best option among many, we are turning our back on the only truth that leads to heaven and the God who has given us that truth. Bring us back to your Word. Send your Holy Spirit to work faith in our hearts that we not only hear your Word but regard it as the truth that brings us to faith and keeps us in that faith our whole life and ultimately to your side in heaven.

Oh Lord, so often we minimize the work of the Holy Spirit in the way we think and talk. We think that we bring ourselves to faith and work hard to remain strong in faith. We don't attribute great miracles and works to God the Holy Spirit in our own heads and we think that the God the Holy Spirit is not strong enough to give us the strength and courage to share the Word or work through that Word to make a difference in someone's life. On this Pentecost Sunday, point us to the important powerful work of God the Holy Spirit. Help us to see that it is only through Him that we can and do believe in Jesus and have heaven and help us to see the opportunities you give and trust in you for the strength, courage and even the words to say to share your Gospel message.

Oh Lord, sometimes we are surprised when we have troubles and trials and even suffer in this life because of our faith. We know that the world has a very different road of morals, ethics and right and wrong than than what you tell us to believe in your Word. So often when we see that, we want to hide our faith and become invisible Christians. In your Word, you tell us the opposite. You tell us that we should be singing your praises so that people know we believe in you. You tell us to be ready for these troubles because they will come when we are walking in your way as we should. And, you go one step further, you tell us to rejoice when we have these troubles because having troubles for faith shows that the Holy Spirit has worked faith in your heart. Faith which leads to heaven.

Oh Lord we thank you for your Means of Grace, the Gospel in Word and Sacrament, through which you build faith, give forgiveness, sanctify our life and bring us to heaven. We thank you that you not only tell us what you have done, you bring it to us through these sacraments of salvation. In your Word you show us that Baptism is not about what we do for God, baptism is about what you have done for us and give to us through the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus. Help us to reflect upon our baptism to see the love and mercy you show in the miracle of faith, the love of forgiveness and the comfort of being a child of God and an heir of eternal life.
