From the Diocese of Yakima:

Father John Vogl, parochial vicar of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Parish in Benton City, was found dead Sunday in the church rectory after a welfare check by a concerned parishioner. He was 64.

Fr. Vogl, who had been recovering from extensive hernia surgery in early February, had celebrated two Masses Tuesday at St. Joseph Church in Kennewick as he prepared to return to active ministry. His brother Steve reported last night that they had spoken a few times before and after the Masses that day and that Fr. John had reported feeling unwell. A parishioner who attended one of the Masses said he was nervous after more than four months away from leading services but had “done a good job.” He had helped hear confessions during Lent at several parish penance services.

I was able to bless Father John’s body and pray for him last night following a brief investigation by deputies and a detective from the Benton County Sheriff’s Office. It appears he died of natural causes. Einan’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Fr. John’s brother Ken died a year ago. He is survived by his stepmother Barbara and other siblings and cousins. May he rest in peace.

Let's pray for the repose of his soul, and for the Vogl family as we continue to pray for our deceased family, friends, loved ones, parishioners and clients.
