The book of Job deals with the issue of why the righteous suffer. A blameless and upright man, Job feared God and shunned evil all his life. But it did not spare him from great sufferings.

From Job’s calamity and his response, we can see that Job put God first and above his own family. Although he was in utter grief, he was able to endure and find comfort at the end of his trials because he had God. As long as we have God, there is nothing we cannot walk through. With Him in our lives, we will never lose what is the most important. Family and all our possessions are God-given, but God alone is the source of all things and our only unchanging foundation. Job’s realization of this allowed him to withstand such a calamity, so that he was able to acknowledge that the Lord gives and takes away. And whatever his circumstance, Job blessed the name of the Lord.

Job feared God and had a spirit of obedience towards the Lord. So even though he did not fully understand why he was suffering at first, he still accepted his lot and did not sin nor blame God. Likewise, as long as we fear God we will not leave Him and, if we wait patiently, we will see His will in our lives.

Job put his faith in God and, while he did not understand and as he questioned Him, God guided him and manifested His mercy and compassion by forgiving Job’s ignorance. God sees our hearts as He saw Job’s heart. As long as we have the right perspectives and priorities, God will help us find what we still lack to make us more perfect. Just like Job, we can grow to be more upright and blameless as we face our trials.

Questions for reflection:

1. How was Job able to accept his calamity without fully understanding why he encountered such sufferings?
2. How was Job’s faith proven through his sufferings?

BIBLE VERSE REFLECTION

"For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes."
(1 Corinthians 11:26)

What does it mean to proclaim the Lord’s death?
Every time we partake of the Holy Communion, we should strive for further improvement in our faith, words, and actions. Then, when people see our transformation, we will be able to glorify God and thus proclaim His death.

There is only one body, and God has only one church. This is the teaching of the Bible. How this one church is interpreted is another story. But we cannot deny that from the Bible, there is only one church. In God’s eyes, there is only one church. But how do we recognize this one church? The one church of God is determined by the truth that she preaches. Doctrinally speaking, this church must be built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone.

God forgives us daily. How many times have we repented, but then stumbled on the same mistakes again? Think about how many times He has forgiven us because of how much love He holds for us. We are the children of God. Each day God watches over us, in the hope that we will make the right decisions, and when we stumble, the one that takes the grief to heart is God. He waits silently hoping that we will truly return and not stray again.

So when it seems like there’s no hope, just remember that if we repent with all our heart, God will listen, because He loves us, and when we have gone astray, He is forever waiting by the door for us to come home.

Questions for Reflection:

Are you a prodigal son in need of true repentance and turning back to God? What active steps are you taking to return to the right path?

Why does God want to save the world anyway?

There are two major reasons God wants to save the world:
God loves the world and desires to have mercy on his creation (Jn 3:16; 1 Jn 4:10, 16; Tit 3:5; Lk 1:78).

God wants to manifest his glory to those he has mercy on (Rom 9:23).
Motivated by his mercy and love, God gives abundant grace to his creation. The Bible says, “our God and Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting consolation and good hope by grace” (2 Thess 2:16). The Bible says, “I [God] will have mercy on whomever I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whomever I have compassion” (Rom 9:15). God’s merciful salvation comes to us because of the great love with which he loves us (Eph 2:4).

The Lord Jesus once told His disciples, "These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world" (Jn 16:33). Genuine peace comes directly from the Lord; it is not found in the world and cannot be attained by human effort. Many people spend their lives building their castle of wealth, status, power, and health. Unfortunately, they are unaware that this castle is so fragile that it cannot withstand a single blow.

God tells us that He will give us peace, but also that as long as we’re in this world we will experience tribulation. Most people think that there is a conflict between peace and tribulation, that one cannot have peace when one suffers bankruptcy, illness, or the loss of a job. But in the sight of God, tribulation and peace can co-exist without contradicting each other. God had promised us His peace, but He did not guarantee a smooth course of life.

How then, do we experience true peace from God? We need to receive from Him the spiritual insight to transcend our physical circumstances and to see the great blessing of eternal life to come.
