Sharing the Peace of Christ
Hymn of Praise: UMH #147 All Things Bright and Beautiful

Call to Worship
One: God of promise and hope, restore us –
All: You who bring down the mighty and raise on high the lowly.
One: In the meeting of Mary and Elizabeth
All: you stirred life, joy and hope in women who were insignificant in the world’s eyes.
One: May this encourage us to pay attention to the forgotten people,
All: the unimportant places, the insignificant encounters, and there recognize hope waiting to be born.
One: As we wait for the coming of our Saviour, let your face shine on us,
All: so that we in turn might radiate light that no darkness will ever smother.

Lighting the Candle of Peace, Hope, and Justice: During the struggle against apartheid, Methodists in South Africa began their worship each week by lighting a candle encircled in barbed wire in remembrance of those suffering under policies of exclusion and violence. Together, we take up this practice and proclaim that God’s healing love will triumph over hatred.
One: The light shines in the darkness.
All: We stand in this light, unshaken, knowing that the darkness has never overcome the light.
One: Let us recommit ourselves to walking in Jesus’ ways of peace, hope, and justice.
All: Empower us, Jesus, to boldly use the freedom and power given to us to resist evil, injustice, and oppression in whatever forms they present themselves. Amen.

Prayer for Illumination
Hebrew Lesson: 1 Samuel 2:1-10 Amber Schiefer
Gospel Lesson: Luke 1:39-56 Judy Kane

Sermon Title: Singing, Salvation, and Sisterhood
Hymn of Response: UMH #198 My Soul Gives Glory to My God

Time of Anointing for Hope and Healing: On fifth Sundays, we observe a special time of prayer and anointing. We lift up that which needs healing or hope, and we ask Jesus to enter into our lives. Those who wish may come to Communion Rail (or simply remain in your seats, if preferred) to receive a blessing and an anointing with oil.

Prayers of the People: We invite you to share your joys, concerns, and prayer requests via Facebook comments before the end of the sermon to be shared with the gathered community.
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen

Time of Gratitudes and Offerings: Your presence as part of the BUMC Facebook community is always the greatest gift. If you feel called to support BUMC financially, you may give online at www.bensalem-umc.org.

Offertory
Doxology: UMH #95
Unison Offertory Prayer: Loving God, our spirits rejoice in all your gracious acts towards us. We give thanks for the willingness of Mary to believe that the impossible could and would happen. We give thanks for Elizabeth, who welcomed her with joy in a difficult time. Help us to have a similar faith. Open our hearts and minds to believe that your promises can come to surprising fulfillment. Bless these gifts, that we may honor you and care for your creation. Amen.

Parting Hymn: UMH #378 Amazing Grace

Benediction: May we go in peace to love God, love our neighbors, love the strangers amongst us, and love ourselves.

Traditional Service Hymn Lyrics – You are invited to sing along

United Methodist Hymnal #147 All Things Bright and Beautiful
Refrain All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small,
all things wise and wonderful: the Lord God made them all.
Verse 1 Each little flower that opens, each little bird that sings,
God made their glowing colors, and made their tiny wings. (Refrain)
Verse 2 The purple-headed mountains, the river running by,
the sunset and the morning that brightens up the sky. (Refrain)
Verse 3 The cold wind in the winter, the pleasant summer sun,
the ripe fruits in the garden: God made them every one. (Refrain)
Verse 4 God gave us eyes to see them, and lips that we might tell
how great is God Almighty, who has made all things well. (Refrain)

United Methodist Hymnal #198 My Soul Gives Glory to My God
Verse 1 My soul gives glory to my God. My heart pours out its praise. God lifted up my lowliness in many marvelous ways.
Verse 2 My God has done great things for me: yes, holy is this name. All people will declare me blessed, and blessings they shall claim.
Verse 3 From age to age, to all who fear, such mercy love imparts, dispensing justice far and near, dismissing selfish hearts.
Verse 4 Love casts the mighty from their thrones, promotes the insecure, leaves hungry spirits satisfied, the rich seem suddenly poor.
Verse 5 Praise God, whose loving covenant supports those in distress, remembering past promises with present faithfulness.

United Methodist Hymnal #378 Amazing Grace
Verse 1 Amazing grace! How sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found; was blind, but now I see.
Verse 2 'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace my fears relieved;
how precious did that grace appear the hour I first believed.
Verse 3 Through many dangers, toils, and snares, I have already come;
'tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home.
Verse 4 The Lord has promised good to me, his word my hope secures;
he will my shield and portion be, as long as life endures.
Verse 5 Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail, and mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess, within the veil, a life of joy and peace.
Verse 6 When we've been there ten thousand years, bright shining as the sun,
we've no less days to sing God's praise than when we’d first begun.

Offertory: Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow (Doxology) UMH #95

Unison Offertory Prayer:
Holy God, we ask for your help, your power, your Spirit, so that we can amend our lives and grow more each day into the image of Christ. We confess that we fear what is different. We confess that it’s easier to lock the doors of our community than to receive those who don’t look like we look, love like we love, or vote the way we vote. We confess that we have not lived out your call to share in abundant life and unconditional love. We believe that you have the power to turn us around to a more inclusive way of living, so we ask you to do that. We ask you to give us the courage to change. We ask that you give us the energy, intelligence, imagination, and love to be your people in all we say and do. Amen.

Our neighbors, ourselves, and all creation.

All: By loving boldly, serving joyfully,
And leading courageously.
One: Family of God, receive this good news:
In our loving, our serving, and our leading,
We are not alone—God is with us!
All: We come to worship God by loving boldly,
Serving joyfully, and leading courageously
In our community and through our worldwide

Jesus Christ who transform the world. Amen.

Unison Offertory Prayer:
Christ who calls us, you meet us on the mountain where worship and doubt share
the same ground. You call us not because we are certain, but because you are
faithful. As we offer these gifts, we offer ourselves—our questions and our
courage, our fears and our hopes. Use what we bring to form disciples, to teach
with humility, to baptize with joy, and to share a song of grace that reaches every
nation. Shape this offering into witness and welcome, so that love may be known,
community may be formed, and the world may be changed through Christ our
Lord. Amen.

Verse 1 O for a thousand tongues to sing
my great Redeemer's praise,
the glories of my God and King,

Verse 2 My gracious Master and my God,
assist me to proclaim,

that bids our sorrows cease,
'tis music in the sinner's ears,
'tis life and health and peace.

he sets the prisoner free;
his blood can make the foulest clean;
his blood availed for me.
