Slowing Down… Experiencing His Love

"Be still and know that I am God."

Psalm 46:10a (NLT)

It's that time of year again...

The beginning of the "Christmas Rush." It seems that wherever we go, the traffic is heavier, the parking lots are crowded, and folks are bustling around with little time left at the end of the day to "just be." As we hurry about to buy presents, prepare for company, or to finish tasks for the year, it is so easy to become consumed with "busyness." It is in these times, especially, that we forget that God wants us to spend time being still and communing with Him.

The more we rush around, oversubscribed with what we have decided is of great priority, the easier it is to forget our primary purposes for existing - glorifying God and enjoying Him. It is also easier at these times to become anxious and worried about life.
As we hurry and forget to spend time with our Lord, we can forget that He cares about us and sustains us. I still remember a simple poem that hung on the wall in my grandparents’ house when I was a young child. The words of the poem were on a little, tacky plaque that I remember to this day. They come to mind often during times that I have allowed myself to become hurried:
"Said the robin to the sparrow, 'I should really like to know
why these anxious human beings rush about and worry so.'
Said the sparrow to the robin, "Friend, I think that it must be that they have no heavenly Father such as cares for you and me.'"
Although the main thrust of the message in the little poem is needless worry by those who belong to God because of His providence - the idea of rushing about reminds me that it is when we fail to slow down and commune with our Creator that the enemy can use worry and stress to rob us of the joy of belonging to God.
In this season of joy in remembering God's gift to the world - take notice if you find yourself rushing around. Slow down. Stop. Be still and draw close to the Lover of your soul.
In Christ’s Love,
Pastor Bob

Heavenly Father,
Your love amazes me. You've told me that you care for me and know every single event that happens in this world. Even when the tiny sparrow falls, You know it. I confess that I often get caught up in running around, doing, doing, doing...even though who I am becoming in You is so much more important than what I am doing. Thank You for Your faithfulness in convicting me when I begin to lose sight of that. Please continue to work in my life to help me realize the importance of spending quiet time with You. If necessary, put me on my back to make that happen. It is far more important to relate to and with You than to accomplish a thousand trivial things. Your love overwhelms me. Help me to love others more and more like You do. I thank You and praise You.
In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen

God is Talking to You, Are You Listening?

"Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand."
Mark 4:23 (NLT)

Jesus would finish many of His important teachings with emphasizing the need to pay attention to what He was saying. The meaning of "hearing" in the original language carried with it more than just processing the words; it implied a deeper level of listening with both mind and heart. Hearing with one's ears (or reading with one's eyes) is only the beginning. Having "ears to hear" includes appropriating the message and applying it to our own lives. It's so easy to read a passage in the Bible and think about how much the words apply to others who don't seem to seek after the Lord or to live in purity and holiness. I am regularly convicted that I must first listen to what the passage is saying to me before I rush out to share how much it can enlighten someone else. When we do that, we are looking first to open others' ears when ours have "spiritual plugs" in them.

My wife and I, as some of you know, volunteer on a mountain rescue team in Colorado. Our mission is to help find and rescue those who may be hurt or lost in the back country. Some years ago, my wife was on a search for a young girl who was lost. As they combed the trails and woods, they would call out the girl's name over and over. "Jenny! Jenny!" Finally, many hours later, they found Jenny, hiding behind some rocks as lost children sometimes do. "Didn't you hear us calling?" the searchers asked her. "Yes, I heard you," Jenny replied, "but I didn't know you were calling for me." Even in her dire circumstances, this poor little girl couldn't believe that the words she was hearing were meant for her.

Like Jenny, we may often ignore the message that God is giving to us. When we are reading His Word, we must realize that He is speaking to us. He loves us so much that He has given us the Bible, His living and powerful Word, to speak to us today. It is not just an ancient manuscript that lost its relevance over the centuries. Have you ears to hear?

In Christ’s Love,

Pastor Bob

Dear God,

Thank You so much for loving me and valuing me. It's hard for me to understand but You have said that You love me and I have experienced that love over and over again despite my sinful thoughts and actions. Thank You for inspiring the writers of the Bible. Because You authored this revelation of Yourself and preserved it through the centuries, it blesses me every time I read and study what You have said. Please empower me with Your Holy Spirit to overcome my tendency to close my "ears" to what You have to tell me. Open my ears, soften my heart, and focus my mind to receive Your message to me. Wash me in Your Word and fill me with Your presence as I show Your love to everyone I encounter. Protect me from the foolishness of man's "wisdom" and help me to see Your truth. I want to hear You clearly. With a thankful heart I praise Your name and give You all honor and glory.

In the name of our precious Lord and Savior Jesus Christ I pray, Amen

Living What We Know

In any case, we should live up to whatever truth we have attained.

Philippians 3:16 (HCSB)

“Jesus, Jesus, How I trust Him,

How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er,

Jesus, Jesus, Precious Jesus!

O for grace to trust Him more.”

These words from the wonderful old hymn “Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus” remind me that there have been so many times in my life that Jesus has proven to be faithful despite my lack of faith or my missteps in life. When Paul wrote to the believers in the church in Philippi, he encouraged them to grow in maturity, realizing that none of them had achieved complete maturity. Then, he said (paraphrased) “live up to what you know to be true.” So often, we seem to forget what we know to be true - that God is faithful, that He has carried us through all sorts of trouble, that He loves us and has shown us that over and over. Instead, we react to the circumstances in our lives. We believe the latest popular opinion on living. We buy into believing that we are alone and powerless. We begin to believe that we are unloved or maybe even worthless. These are just lies from the enemy. Today, let’s remember that God has given us His truth in His Word and that He has given us great strength in His Spirit. Don’t give up Truth for a cheap substitute offered by the world. Live up to the truth that you know!

In Christ’s Love,

Pastor Bob

Dear Heavenly Father,

Your love is amazing! Even when I stumble and forget Your truth, You don’t give up on me. I do pray for grace to trust You more. As I look back in my life, I can see so many times that You have carried me through difficulties, provided for me in times of need, and comforted me in my sorrow. You are so faithful even when I am not. Help me to live up to the truth that You have shown me and instilled in my heart. Help me to not allow distractions from the world or the enemy to pull my eyes off of You and Your truth. And let me share Your truth with all who are in my life and those You will bring into my life. Sometimes my faith seems so weak despite the faithfulness that You show to me over and over. Increase my desire for You and Your ways as I look forward to an eternity in Your glorious presence.

In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen

Christian Integrity

Let God weigh me on the scales of justice for He knows my integrity. Job 31:6 (NLT)

What is integrity? One reasonable definition is “consistency of actions, values methods, measures, principles, expectations, and outcomes. Also, the honesty and truthfulness or accuracy of one’s actions.” For a Christian, then, integrity is living a life that is consistent with your identity in Jesus Christ. Integrity can be considered as the opposite of hypocrisy. It means not caving in to peer pressure or compromising your values in order to please people. It means not doing something you shouldn’t or failing to do something you should in order to make people like you. A Christian living with integrity is most concerned with pleasing God; showing Him your love for Him by following every day and in every moment what He has revealed to us in the Bible as His directions for living. Job refused to turn against God and reject Him due to his suffering. Joseph ran from the temptation he faced with Potiphar’s wife. David refused to kill Saul in order to protect himself because he respected God’s anointed king. These men acted with integrity. Do you? Day in and day out, are you the same with your non-Christian friends and co-workers as you are with your Christian friends at church? If you are living a life of integrity, you are! Let’s face every day with the courage and conviction to live as God’s children - realizing our future inheritance no matter the circumstances.

In Christ’s Love,

Pastor Bob

Dear God,

Please give me the strength to be consistent in life. Help me to live with integrity each moment of every day. When I am being teased, mocked, or criticized due to my belief in You and my salvation in Jesus Christ, Your precious Son, give me the courage to not compromise. Even beyond that, help me to love those who mock me as I realize their lost condition. Help me to reach out to them in kindness and love and give them the truth of Your Word. Let me lift them up to You in prayer for their salvation. Let Your Holy Spirit convict me when I am straying from walking in righteousness and let me respond quickly in confession and repentance. As You continue to work in my life to make me more and more like Jesus, I pray that I am able to confidently say, as Job did, “weigh me on Your scales because I am living with integrity.”

In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen

“If Only”

“The master said, “Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together!” Matthew 25:23 (NLT)

Have you ever thought “If only I… had more money, more time, a better job, more authority, better health, more strength, more influence, etc.; THEN, Lord, I could really make a difference for you. I could take those abundant resources and invest them in Your kingdom’s work. If only…

Maybe we substitute “As soon as…” in the place of “If only…” As soon as I…retire, get married, finish school, feel better, get myself organized, etc. You see, we can make all kinds of excuses for why we are not fully selling out to God right now. In the parable from which the verse above is taken, one servant made the poor excuse of being afraid to do anything with the little that he was given. Instead of using what he had been given, he just buried it. When we focus on what we don’t have rather than what we’ve been given, we miss out on so much of what God has for us. Do you want to do great things for the Lord? Then be faithful with what He has given you. Be faithful with where he has placed you. Be faithful with the circumstances in which you find yourself. Later in the parable, we read in verse 29, “To those who use well what they are given, even more will be given, and they will have an abundance. But for those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away.”

It seems to be in our nature to think that we are limited by what we don’t have, when in fact God not only knows our situation but is in control of it and wants us to be faithful with what He has put into our lives. We need to “grow where we are planted.”

The old saying “life is what happens while we are busy making plans” rings true for our walk with the Lord, also. Realize that God is all knowing, all powerful, and completely loving. He wants us to be fruitful each and every day. He can and will provide everything we need to grow, flourish, and become everything that He desires for us to be. He is not limited by our physical, intellectual, or emotional abilities. He desires for us to walk with Him each and every day - no excuses - realizing that we have everything required to be faithful and joyful in the day that He has given us. As we are faithful, He will entrust us with more and more. And the joy of living the abundant life in Christ will permeate every aspect of our earthly journey.

So, no excuses! No “If only..” Invest yourself right where you are and as you are and see how the Lord will bless you!

In Christ’s Love,

Pastor Bob

Dear Heavenly Father,

Sometimes I find myself actually believing that I am limited by my own resources. Please forgive me for thinking that they are my resources to begin with and for thinking that You are, in some way, limited by my talents, situation, or difficulties. I so want to do great things for You that I tend to forget that You don’t need for me to do great things; You want me to become more and more like Jesus. Help me to trust You to accomplish whatever You want to do with me. Help me to surrender to You and rely on Your strength and power. Help me not to waste what you have put in my life this very day. Give me the courage not to fear the uncertain but to rather rejoice in the day that You have made and to joyfully grow where You have planted me. Remind me that it’s not about me and my accomplishments but it’s all about Jesus and what He has done. All praise to You.

In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen
