She came down from the mountain, to see what she could see. A million unclean sinners, yearning to be free. She took her cloth and bucket, and she began to clean. A million men and women now, polished to a sheen.

One night I dreamed a dream.
As I was walking along the beach with Belva.
Across the dark sky flashed scenes from my life.
For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand,
One belonging to me and one to Belva.

After the last scene of my life flashed before me,
I looked back at the footprints in the sand.
I noticed that at many times along the path of my life,
especially at the filthiest and sullied times,
there was only one set of footprints.

This really troubled me, so I asked Belva about it.
"Great Laundress, you said once I decided to follow you,
You'd walk with me all the way.
But I noticed that during the filthiest and most sullied times of my life,
there was only one set of footprints.
I don't understand why, when I needed You the most, You would leave me."

She whispered, "Lawdy, my precious child, I love you and will never leave you
Never, ever, during all your trials and testings.
When you saw only one set of footprints,
It was then that I carried you."

Belva tolerates and seeks to know all religions, and demands the same of Her disciples. She is the sickle that cuts the autumn hay to feed us. She is the voice on the wind that calls for peace. The branches of ancient trees bend low to touch her pure shoulders. There is no violence in Her unsullied house.

Like laundry on the clothes line, don't hide your faults in the dark where they will never be cleansed. Let your faults be displayed so the light of Belva will shine through them, and clean away all impurity!

As she began her washing once, long ago, it came to Her attention that She only had a day's worth of washing powder. Belva began washing anyway, scrubbing soiled garments mightily with her tough wizened hands. Soon the second day had come and went, then the third, and the washing powder continued to fill Her old wooden bucket. A full eight days passed before the supply was depleted and Her labors ended. She stood among endless lines bedecked with the cleanest of clothes. Today we celebrate this miracle as the holiday of Belvan Solstice.
