GENESIS 1-11 SERMON SERIES AND DISCUSSION TIME:
On Sunday, September 3, I will begin preaching a 13-week sermon series on Genesis chapters 1-11. I also plan to lead a discussion and study time each Sunday (beginning Sept. 10) from 9:15-9:45 AM based on the previous Sunday’s lesson and sermon.

Genesis is the first book of the Hebrew Bible (our Old Testament), the first book of the Pentateuch (the “Five Books”). The Pentateuch is the first five books of the Bible, the “Torah” (the “Law”) in Hebrew. Genesis is from the Greek word for “Beginning.” The Hebrew title is “Beresh*th,” meaning “In the Beginning” from the opening words of the book. Genesis has two parts: Chapters 1-11 is the primeval history of the world and humanity; Chapters 12-50 is the patriarchal history of the Hebrew people (beginning with Father Abraham).

Genesis 1-11 addresses basic questions of human life via the stories of Creation, the Garden of Eden, Cain and Abel, Noah and the Flood, the Tower of Babel. The fundamental motif is Creation-Fall-Redemption which is the basic framework for understanding the entire Bible, both Old and New Testaments. Genesis 1-11 leads us to ask questions such as: Who am I? Why am I here? Who is God? Why is there evil in the world?

Some of you have expressed interest in a Bible study or discussion class about our faith. Some churches have a discussion based on the sermon and Bible lessons immediately following the Sunday worship service. That would not work in our church. So I came up with this idea: Hold a discussion on the previous week’s sermon and Genesis lesson before worship from 9:15-9:45 AM (from Sept. 10 through Dec. 3). For those who choose to come early for this, you will want to jot down or commit to memory your questions and ideas from the prior week. We will meet in our Fellowship Hall. Whether you come or not, please read the Bible lessons (listed in the Calendar below) prior to each service.

“Happy is everyone who fears the Lord, who walks in his ways. You shall eat the
fruit of the labor of your hands; you shall be happy, and it shall go well with you”
(Psalm 128:1-2 NRSV).
As I write this, we are in the middle of the summer gardening season (for those
who garden): watering, weeding, harvesting, eating, preserving. My family
thanks the Lord for our fresh, organic produce: tomatoes, cucumbers, squash,
zucchini, green beans, sweet peppers, radishes, basil, parsley.
This reminds me that we reap what we sow, for good or ill. Galatians 6:7-10
NRSV: “Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for you reap whatever you sow.
If you sow to your own flesh, you will reap corruption from the flesh; but if you
sow to the Spirit, you will reap eternal life from the Spirit. So let us not grow
weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give
up. So then, whenever we have an opportunity, let us work for the good of all,
and especially for those of the family of faith.”
I will complete my sermon series on The Apostles’ Creed in August. Then in
September I plan to begin a 13-week sermon series on Genesis chapters 1-11
regarding the primeval history of humanity and what this means for us today.
Thank you for your commitment to Christ and support of our church.

Supply Pastor Contract Renewed: I am grateful that our Session (Council of Elders) voted to approve the renewal of my half-time Supply Pastor contract with Belton Presbyterian Church for a sixth year (July 1, 2023—June 30, 2024). I also continue to serve as a part-time chaplain with Good Shepherd Hospice (Independence MO office).

I thank God for all of you and for all that you do as the Belton Presbyterian Church family. Thank you for your continuing gifts of time, talents and treasure as we engage together in ministry and mission locally and globally. I feel blessed to have gotten to know you and for the privilege of working with you in this corner of God’s kingdom. My prayer is that we continue to work together as we discern what the Lord wants us to be and do as a Matthew 25 congregation.

On June 11, I plan to begin a summer sermon series on the basics of our Christian faith as summarized in the Apostles’ Creed.

Thank you to Rich Gill, who has agreed to be our new “web-master” and has set up our new website: https://beltonpresbyterianonmain.com. Check it out! We also have a Facebook site, moderated by Winnie Gill, at https://www.facebook.com/BeltonMOPresbyterianChurch.

We Are a Matthew 25 Church!

Our congregation has accepted the invitation of our denomination, the Presbyterian Church (USA), to follow Jesus’ teachings in Matthew 25:31–46 by becoming active disciples and making a difference in our community and the world. As part of our Matthew 25 commitment, we pledge to embrace one or more of these three areas of focus:

• Building congregational vitality by deepening and energizing our faith and growing as joyful leaders and disciples actively engaged with our community as we share the gospel of Jesus Christ in word and deed

• Dismantling structural racism by fearlessly applying our faith to advocate and break down the systems, practices and thinking that underlie discrimination, bias, prejudice and oppression of people of color

• Eradicating systemic poverty by acting on our beliefs and working to change laws, policies, plans and structures in our society that perpetuate economic exploitation of people who are poor.

To learn more and for ideas on how to get involved and do your vital part as a member of a Matthew 25 church, please visit pcusa.org/matthew25.
