Come and See – Week 2 Who Is Jesus? John 1:6–13 — Into the Light
Big Idea: The true Light demands a response: reject Him and remain in darkness, or receive Him and become a child of God.
1. The Light Is Announced (v. 6–9)
John's mission was not to be the Light, but to point people to the Light.
2. The Light Is Rejected (v. 10–11)
The Creator entered His creation, yet many refused to recognize Him.
3. The Light Is Received (v. 12–13)
Those who receive Christ receive a completely new identity.
One Sentence Summary
Jesus, the true Light, came into a dark world; though many rejected Him, everyone who receives Him by faith is born into God's family.
Closing Invitation
Come into the Light.
• Stand in awe that the Creator entered His creation.
• Receive Him by faith.
• Leave as one who now carries His Light into the world.

Week 1 — John 1:1–5 The Eternal Word: Jesus Before Time
Big Idea: Because Jesus is the eternal Word, every disciple is formed by hearing, believing and living His Word.
Textual Movements:

Movement 2 — The Creating Word (v. 3)
Movement 3 — The Living Word (v. 4–5)
The Big Send:
Radical Hospitality Before Radical Holiness: Jesus brings light into darkness before demanding change. Likewise, Eastview welcomes people as they are, trusting that the Light of Christ transforms lives from the inside out. Grace initiates the journey toward holiness.
Identity Recap: Because Jesus is the eternal Word, we will become a people who are shaped more by Scripture than by culture.

Today is the day we have been working towards for months now, we start our teaching through the Gospel of John! We're beginning our first of four phases as we make our way through the Gospel account. Today's teaching is a 30,000ft overview of the Gospel and its structure, purposes, etc. as well as why we're studying this particular account in this particular season.

Day 4: The Cost of Costly Grace

Reading: Ephesians 2:1-10; 1 Peter 1:17-21

Devotional: Cheap grace says, "You're a good person; you'll be fine." Costly grace says, "You were dead in sin, but Christ paid everything to make you alive." Cheap grace requires nothing and changes nothing. Costly grace cost God His Son and costs us our old life. Many churches today peddle cheap grace; forgiveness without repentance, baptism without discipleship, communion without confession. But what cost God so much cannot be cheap for us. The woman caught in adultery received costly grace: full forgiveness paired with a clear command to "go and sin no more." Jesus didn't excuse her behavior; He transformed her future. Salvation is free, but it's not cheap. It demands we die to ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Jesus. Have you accepted cheap grace that requires nothing, or costly grace that transforms everything?

Day 3: Writing in the Dust

Reading: Jeremiah 17:13-14; Psalm 51:1-12

Devotional: When Jesus stooped to write in the dust, He fulfilled ancient prophecy: those who abandon the Lord would be "written in the dust." The accusers came with stones and self-righteousness, but Jesus exposed their hypocrisy by writing their sins in the very dust that symbolized their spiritual death. They wanted judgment; He offered conviction. They demanded punishment; He provided opportunity for repentance. Notice Jesus stooped twice; the posture of humility, the position of a servant. He could have stood tall and condemned them all, but instead He lowered Himself, just as He would soon lower Himself to the position of submission to the cross. The accusers slipped away, beginning with the oldest, those who had accumulated the most sin. Before you throw stones at anyone else's brokenness, remember your own dust-written sins. Create in me a clean heart, O God.

Day 2: Sixteen Inches from Heaven

Reading: Jeremiah 17:9-10; Romans 10:9-10

Devotional: Sixteen inches separate the head from the heart and heaven from hell. Knowing about Jesus intellectually is vastly different from surrendering to Him personally. The Pharisees knew Scripture better than anyone, yet they missed the Living Water standing before them. They cleaned the outside of the cup while the inside remained filthy. Biblical knowledge without heart transformation produces religious performance, not salvation. Jesus doesn't want behavior modification; He wants heart renovation. The journey from head to heart requires humility to admit we're not good people, that moralism cannot save us, and that we desperately need a Savior. Where are you on this sixteen-inch journey? Is Jesus your theological concept or your living Lord? True faith transforms the inner person, and that transformation inevitably shows on the outside.

Day 1: The Bicycle You Actually Need

Reading: John 8:1-11; 2 Corinthians 12:9

Devotional: Sometimes God's provision doesn't look like what we expected. Like a rusty bicycle that needed new parts to become functional, our lives require transformation rather than superficial improvements. We dream of the shiny version of ourselves; successful, polished, admired. But God sees what we actually need: new chains to move forward, fresh tires to gain traction, and stripped-away rust that hinders our journey. The woman caught in adultery expected condemnation but received costly grace instead. She didn't get what she deserved; she got what she needed, transformation. God's grace costs Him everything and gives us the only true life. What "bicycle" are you disappointed with today that God is actually using to make you drivable for His kingdom?

WEEK 3 – "The Gospel of Moralism" The Lie: "Being Good, Is Good Enough"
Opening Reading: John 8:1-11
The Three Sayings
1. Cleanliness is next to godliness.
2. Spare the rod, spoil the child.
3. Hate the sin, love the sinner.
These three sayings focus on external behavior while missing heart transformation.

Big Idea: Jesus did not come to IMPROVE behavior; He came to TRANSFORM hearts.

Teaching Movements:
"Cleanliness is next to godliness."
Point 1: God cares more about inward holiness than outward appearances.
• Matthew 23:25-28 – Woe to you Pharisees; you clean the outside of the cup, while the inside is full of greed and self-indulgence..
• Psalm 51:10 – Create in me a clean heart, and renew a steadfast spirit
Clean HANDS without a clean HEART accomplish nothing.
What the Bible actually emphasizes:
• Purity of heart (Matthew 5:8)
• Inner holiness (1 Peter 1:15-16)
• Spiritual cleansing (Psalm 51)
God is far more concerned with INWARD TRANSFORMATION than OUTWARD TIDINESS.

"Spare the rod, spoil the child."
Point 2: Biblical discipline is discipleship.
• Hebrews 12:5-11 – Endure hardships as disciple, if you are not disciplined you are not legitimate sons and daughters of God
• Ephesians 6:4 – Fathers do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them, bring them up in instruction and discipline that comes from the Lord
God's model is not PUNISHMENT but FORMATION.
Many assume this comes directly from Proverbs. The exact phrase originated in a poem by Samuel Butler.
It comes from the epic-length 17th-century poem ”Hudibras”, written by Samuel Butler (1612-1680), a cheeky British poet who enjoyed mocking religious extremists and hypocrites.
Proverbs does discuss discipline (Proverbs 13:24), but its advice is the OPPOSITE.
24The one who will not use the rod hates his son, but the one who loves him disciplines him diligently.

"Hate the sin, love the sinner."
Point 3: Grace and truth belong together.
• John 1:14 – The Word became flesh and made His home among us…
• Luke 5:31-32 – Healthy people don’t need a doctor, the sick do…
The phrase "hate the sin, love the sinner" is not Scripture.
Jesus did something better. He LOVED SINNERS while CALLING THEM TO REPENTANCE.
While many view it as a useful summary of Christian ethics, the phrase itself never appears in Scripture.
The concept has historical roots reaching back to thinkers such as Augustine of Hippo.
It’s from St. Augustine. His Letter 211 (c. 424) contains the phrase Cum dilectione hominum et odio vitiorum, which translates roughly to “With love for mankind and hatred of sins.” The phrase has become more famous as “love the sinner but hate the sin” or “hate the sin and not the sinner” (the latter form appearing in Mohandas Gandhi’s 1929 autobiography).

Gospel Invitation
Religion says: "Clean yourself up."
Jesus says: "Come to Me and I will make you new."

Conclusion:
The false gospels of self-reliance, comfort and moralism are all inverted remnants of the truth; in reality…
1. We are WEAKER than we think.
2. God is WISER than we think.
3. Grace is GREATER than we think.
