Mother Amata Veritas, OP, is the Prioress General of the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, Ann Arbor, MI. She has had many experiences in the adventure of religious life, from teaching sixth grade and high school English to serving the community as postulant mistress. In the summer of 2021, she was elected Prioress General. In this role she loves seeing how Our Lord is at work in and through her community as they proclaim the truth and bring children, young people, and adults to know and love Christ, through the Dominican charism of preaching Jesus who is the Way, the Truth and the Life.

History of the Feast of Corpus Christi

Each year in June, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, honoring the true presence of Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist. This beautiful feast began more than 700 years ago during the Middle Ages.

The devotion began with St. Juliana of Mont Cornillon, a Belgian nun who received
visions from Jesus asking for a special feast in honor of the Eucharist. She encouraged Church leaders to establish this devotion, including the future Pope Urban IV.

In 1263, a Eucharistic miracle took place in Bolsena when a priest struggling with
doubts about the Real Presence saw the consecrated Host begin to bleed during Mass.Pope Urban IV investigated the miracle and had the sacred relics brought to Orvieto Cathedral, where they remain today.

Inspired by both the visions of St. Juliana and the miracle at Bolsena, Pope Urban IV
officially established the Feast of Corpus Christi in 1264. He also asked St. Thomas
Aquinas to compose hymns and prayers for the feast, including the beautiful Lauda
Sion, still prayed today.
