Christians know they need more than sleep or breaks, more than physical rest. If we suffer from lack of physical rest, how much more do we need spiritual rest! The only place to find that type of rest is Jesus. Jesus provides more than a pause in work or enjoyable recreation. Jesus provides the removal of our sins, the cleansing of our guilty consciences, and a gentle new yoke of discipleship in the freedom of the gospel. In Jesus, Christians find rest right now from burdens and battles, and eventually eternal rest in heaven.

It is self-destructive to love bad things. It is just as harmful to love good things in a bad order. Christians love the people whom God has placed into their lives. But when those people desire something that God does not desire, Christians love and serve God above all. For example, it would seem to be a good thing for a man to love his neighbor. But if he loves his neighbor more than he loves his wife, his “love” for both is disordered. For love to be healthy, it needs to be properly ordered.

Properly ordered love leads us to be faithful to God and his Word. We love God above all because he first loved us. Join us for Worship at Good Shepherd at 10:00 on Sunday "Say it Loud! Love God Above All"

They never forgot their past. Moses never forgot how he failed his people. Paul never forgot that he was the worst. Matthew never forgot that everyone hated him for who he was.
But God forgot their past. He forgave all their sins and called them to proclaim his mercy. Christians are sinners whom God has mercifully called. Only mercy can explain why Jesus brings people to faith and promises them salvation. Only grace can explain how he calls them to live a new life, as living examples of the Gospel.

The Season after Pentecost features what Christ teaches, and Christians in every calling are encouraged to say it loud. The truths of God’s Word are good for the soul, useful for life, and more reliable than anything else in the world. Watch out for false teachers who come with wise sounding words and pious promises, but who do not base everything on the Word of God! This festival of the Holy Trinity begins the second half of the Church Year with a proclamation of people being baptized and blessed in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, the only true God.

If Jesus had stayed in the grave, the Holy Spirit still wouldn't be sent. But Jesus lives, and it makes a difference. The Holy Spirit has come. Pentecost, the celebration of the special arrival of the Holy Spirit, is the third great festival of the Church, along with the Nativity and the Resurrection. Pentecost closes the fifty-day period after Easter and ends the festival half of the church year. The Church dresses in red on this day to commemorate the tongues of fire that marked the Spirit’s gift as well as the blood of the martyrs.

Without the resurrection of Jesus, we would have to wonder who oversees the world, for the times the world seems so chaotic.
But he lives, and it makes a difference. Jesus is head over everything for the Church. At the time of Ascension, he takes his proper place.
It’s been a long time since Jesus ascended into heaven. Has he forgotten about me? He lives, and it makes a difference. I know how my life will turn out, and that certainty about the future helps with life’s present difficulties. While I wait in the time between Christ’s ascension and his return on judgment day, God will be glorified among us.
