Belmont Abbey Monastery

Belmont Abbey Monastery Belmont Abbey is a Benedictine monastery located in Belmont, North Carolina. Belmont Abbey is a monastery of the Benedictine Order.

For more than 1500 years, men have become monks according to Saint Benedict’s insight. But each Benedictine abbey stands independently, with its own unique character. So although the monks of Belmont observe a centuries-old Rule, still followed in monasteries throughout the world, this abbey has its own distinct life. The Abbey is situated on a 700-acre campus in the Piedmont area of North Carolin

a. While it is positioned near the conveniences of urban life, it has preserved the benefits of its somewhat removed location, which helps buffer it from the distractions of ordinary life. A Benedictine monastery exists as a witness to the world, testifying that the Gospel is more than an ideal: It is a standard of living, an application of the belief that Jesus Christ is still the way, the truth, and the life (Jn 14:6). Daily life at Belmont Abbey is designed to allow time for prayer (both in community and individually), work, spiritual reading, personal interests, and the various dimensions of living together (meals, fraternal relations, housework, etc.). Within the monastery there is a library, a reading room (with newspapers and journals), a refectory (dining room), infirmary (for care of monks who are aged or ill), supplies-room, tailor’s workshop, parlors for meeting with guests, and other facilities. The model of Benedictine life is the family. The Abbot, who is elected by the Belmont monks, acts as father of the community. Each of the monks assists him in covering the daily tasks of the house. For example, the Abbot appoints a procurator to take care of financial affairs and relieve the individual monks from having to give time to external business. Although meals are prepared by a hired cook, the monks assist in the care of the refectory (dining room). The sacristans care for the church and prepare for the liturgies. Most of the housekeeping and other day-to-day tasks are handled by the monks, too. The monks of Belmont each have diverse backgrounds. They have chosen to give their lives to the Lord as Benedictine monks of Belmont Abbey. This choice is the result of a process of discernment that each monk commits to after deep personal reflection.

The contrast is striking: young people preparing for ambitious careers… and monks who have devoted their lives to prayer, stability, humility, and God. But here at , it is the two worlds intercepting that makes this school so special - our monastic community and our students. A few moments before commencement, our monastic community shared their final thoughts of wisdom with the graduates….

One monk shared, “Make sure to find time for prayer and quiet amidst the craziness of this world!”

Their words cut through the noise with remarkable clarity. They are a reminder that while the world changes quickly - truth, character, and purpose remain timeless.

Whether you are newly graduated, or many years into your career or vocation, these reflections from the monastic community are for all of us. 🙏

As we celebrate the recent Graduation of the Class of 2026 we also reflect back on a remarkable piece of Belmont Abbey history!

Many years ago, Bishop Fulton Sheen stood before graduates at to encourage them as they stepped into the world — a reminder that education is not only about achievement, but about truth, purpose, and serving others faithfully.

Looking at this archival piece of Abbey history today, it’s beautiful to think about the generations of graduates who have walked these halls since then, each carrying their own hopes, vocations, and callings into the world.

One of Fulton Sheen’s most enduring reminders feels especially fitting for graduates today:

“Never measure your life by possessions. Measure it by the hearts you touched.”

Congratulations to this year’s graduates of Belmont Abbey. May you go forward with wisdom, courage, and faith, and may you always remember that you have a home here at the Abbey and our monastic community keeps you in prayer!

Happy Founder’s Day 2026! We invite you today to join us in celebrating the 150th anniversary of the founding of Belmont Abbey and Belmont Abbey College.

It was on this day in 1876 when Father Herman Wolfe made the long journey from Saint Vincent’s Arch-abbey in Latrobe, Pennsylvania to found a monastery and educational institution on the old Caldwell Plantation in what was then Garibaldi, North Carolina; the town would later be renamed Belmont at the behest of Haid and the monks. Wolfe was accompanied by two boys who would be the first students of the nascent school, Harry Plageman and Anthony Lauman. Four days later four lay brothers followed from Pennsylvania to help with the farm work. The place was primitive, but Father Wolfe and the first few to accompany him worked diligently.
A pivotal event then occurred in 1885 when the Chapter at Saint Vincent’s elected Leo Haid abbot of the new monastery. Upon his arrival, the prospect of success still seemed dim. Haid, his loyal and indispensable prior Father Felix Hintemeyer and the first monks, however, dedicated themselves to building the monastery and college industriously, laying the physical, intellectual and spiritual foundations upon which Belmont Abbey and Belmont Abbey College stand to this day. Let us pray for this beautiful place, for its preservation and the continuation of God’s grace!

Wishing all of you a blessed and abundant Easter Season from our monastic community!

In this morning’s Easter Mass, Fr. Elias shared in his homily the importance of running towards our goal of heaven:

“The scriptures have many references to running in a spiritual sense — St. Paul tells us ‘there are many runners in the race but only one who wins a prize. Run as to win.’ The Letter to the Hebrews encourages to ‘persevere in running the race and keep our eyes fixed on Jesus’ And finally St. Benedict in his rule says to new monks, ‘ Do not be daunted by fear, and run to the road that leads to salvation! It is bound to be narrow at the onset, but as we persevere we shall run on the path of God’s commandments!’ Running represents the maximum effort of the human body….in light of the Ressurection spiritually we should run towards our ultimate goal - Heaven! ” 🙏

Today The Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Annunciation, when “St Gabriel the Archangel told the Blessed Virgin Mary she would be the Mother of the Son of God. She gave her fiat (“be it done”), upon which she conceived the Savior by the power of The Holy Spirit” (RM 1785). Regarding the Solemnity, The Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us, “The Annunciation to Mary inaugurates ‘the fullness of time,’ the time of the fulfillment of God’s promises and preparations. Mary was invited to conceive him in whom the ‘whole fullness of deity’ would dwell ‘bodily.’ The Divine response to her question, ‘How can this be since I know not man?’ was given by the power of the Spirit: ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you’” (CCC 484).
When the monks from St Vincent Abbey come to Belmont (then Garibaldi) in 1876, they entrusted the monastery to the protection of The Virgin Mary under the title Mary Help of Christians, enfolding the place into the tradition that all monasteries are under the protection of Our Lady.
So let us pray with Universal Church today that we may imitate The Blessed Virgin Mother in her humility, in her “fiat” in doing God’s will, and trust in His plan for us, our monastery, our College and the world.

Mary Help of Christians, pray for us! Amen.🙏

It is with great joy and gratitude that we celebrate our patron saint today, Saint Benedict, the Father of Western Monasticism!

In the sixth century, Saint Benedict wrote a rule “written for beginners” by which to order his monastery and cultivate virtue and holiness in his monks, so that they may one day enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Yet the influence of The Rule of Saint Benedict and Benedictine monasteries have had a transformative effect on civilization.

Over the course of our 1,500-year-old tradition, Benedictines have brought order to a chaotic world through exemplifying obedience, stability, and conversatio morum (a life of conversion) out of love for Christ. The Benedictine form of monasticism has taught the world how to live a life of love and charity so that “in all things God may be glorified.” No less in our corner of the world.

Happy Feast of St. Patrick!☘️

This beloved saint is beautifully immortalized in our basilica on one of our many stained glass windows depicting the saints. Stop by and say a prayer to this saint who embodies our Abbey’s missionary spirit in so many ways.

And swipe to see at St. Patrick’s day procession at circa 1908! ☘️🇮🇪
