Smith Cemetery Historic Preservation Association Help us restore and preserve the Smith Cemetery, a 251 year old cemetery, believed to be the oldest Restoration efforts began in 2009. In 2012, Mr. and Mrs.

Smith Cemetery began in 1765 with the first burial of James Leeper. It is located on 1.65 acres and does not have a legal owner as the cemetery was sold to the Leeper and Armstrong families and their descendants in 1836. Smith Cemetery Historic Preservation Association Inc., is an IRS approved 501(3)(c) non-profit. Over 85 broken headstones have been repaired. six Southern Cross of Honor markers a

nd four new headstones have been added. Ford were nominated by the William Gaston Chapter and received a National DAR Historic Preservation Award. The Association continues to provide perpetual ground care and in all efforts related to its historical preservation. For more information, please contact R. Wreathes Across America came over this past Saturday (14th) and placed 10 Ceremonial Wreathes on the inside of the front fence, then laid Christmas Wreathes on the graves of the 10 Veterans buried here. They will remain on the graves until approximately, January 14,2025.

We were honored to be the receipient selected by the Major William Chronicle DAR Chapter in Gastonia, NC!

In the spring of 2022, I had the front landscaped and 7 Yoshino Cherry Trees were planted. It’s very important to water them frequently during the first year, afterwards they are very hardy!!! This spring they all bloomed with colorful pink fragrant blooms!

These pictures occurred in mid November, 2021.

There were 2 trees left, and the largest Oak, which somehow took root and grew up between the original front gate entrance to cenetery! Over the years as this became a little used cemetery and the tree grew larger and taller, it pushed the two granite gate posts to the sides, at approximately 20 degree angles, and the tree and bark simply grew around the steel strips of the entrance gate. I asked the tree cutters to leave the stump and original gate parts to reflect upon and save a small piece of history. They cut the bottom section of the tree off, just above the gate area and I have covered the top of the stump with at least 4-5 coats of polyurethane!,

I’m having the old Large Old Oak Trees in front of the cemetery removed, primarily for liability and ongoing maintenance concerns. The trees on the left side next to the Smith Property, could all be on the target list for the New Belwood Drive entrance, and I think it’s 73 new Condos and single family homes. These
