Internet restored. Everything seems to be working correctly. We should be able to live stream as usual today. (But of course, we LOVE seeing you in person!)

More about Sunday, 9/6/26. A storm knocked out the internet at the church Saturday evening. If it is not repaired by tomorrow morning, we will be unable to live stream the service. Hopefully, it will be working.

I have a sloppy signature. A fact that I am not proud of, but it is reality. Every time I sign my name, I tell myself, “Make it legible. This is your NAME. It means something.” But by the time I get to “e-r-s-o-n” at the end, my hand just … makes a scribble. It really bugs me, and I am trying to improve it. Why? Because it is my name. It is the name of my father, my grandfather, and all who came before. I don’t want my poor hand (self)-control to reflect poorly on my family name. It means something and my “scribble” at the end makes it seem like I don’t much care. I do. I just fail at it more times than not.

My new name, “Christian,” is much the same. I want to wear it proudly (the right kind of proud). I want it to mean something too. Why? Because my Father is behind it. My Lord and my Savior died to give it to me. And when I fail to live up to it (often! ashamedly so), I fail them. I know I am not worthy of the Name. But I also know the One Who Is, and He has claimed me … still.

"To Current Occupant" You know what comes next is not personal. I have seen and heard about job applications where the applicant just "cut-and-pasted" generic information, or failed to change the template, "Your name goes here" before sending it in. (I have been frequently guilty of "cut-and-paste" failures - but let's don't make this about me!)

Getting something "just for you," written to you, tailored to you, is special. The sender took time. They were thoughtful.

The Book of Revelation opens with seven tailored, personal messages to seven churches. Jesus had something specific to say to them, yet at the same time, He wanted these messages shared to all the churches. What does He want to reveal to us today?

Everything in the universe is made up of atoms. At the center of each atom is a nucleus, around which electrons orbit. The moon circles the earth. The earth circles the sun … even our solar system circles the center of our galaxy … and so on. Something is at the center of everything, right down to that atoms that compose matter.

This physical reality mirrors the spiritual one. Something is at the center of our beliefs, our desires, our being. That something actually is Someone. He is at the center of all.

What comes to your mind when you think about the book of Revelation? Fear? Confusion? Dread?

What if I told you that it was not that complicated? What if I told you Revelation was about One thing?

"No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.” (Luke 9:62) That verse was always unsettling to me - Jesus telling us something that disqualifies us from kingdom. But, He did say it - and meant it. He does not need nor want disciple who are constantly looking over their shoulder, haunted by or longing for things behind them. Both reasons produce the same effect - failure to look and move forward.

Paul got it. "One thing I do," he wrote to the Philippian church, "I forget what is behind, and I press on to what is ahead."

"If you were going to be marooned on a desert island, what one thing would you take with you?" My answer is always, "A big, honkin' boat!"

Or what about this one; "If you had three wishes, what would you wish for?" My third wish is always, "Three more wishes." Just makes sense to me.

Of course those parlor-game scenarios never play out in real life, but sometimes we might like to daydream.

David (of the Psalms) was masterful at not only putting his thoughts and feelings in to Biblical poetry, but also at communicating very deep spiritual truths and convicting us - if we will read and allow the Spirit to work - of our own deficits when it comes to our relationship with God. In one of his dark moments, David reminds us of the one thing he would ask from God. And so should we!

Please join us this Sunday, 08/02/26 at 10:30, in-person or online at https://gastonchristian.church/watch for worship and the message, "One Thing I Ask." Please read Psalm 27.
