The Knights of Columbus Columban Council 6192 is pleased to recognize Becky (Rebecca) and Doug as the Knights Family of the Month for August 2026.
Married for 52 years at the Capehart Chapel now called “Our Lady of Peace” on May 11, 1974 they have raised 4 sons: Ryan (46); Austin (42) and Sean (39); all 3 sons graduated from St. Mary’s School; all were lectors at Mass and all are Eagle Scouts from St. Mary’s Scout Troop 305. They have no grandchildren.
Doug is not a member of the Knights as he is not Catholic. However, he has been involved with several things at St. Mary’s Church and school and has supported the Knights fish fries and spaghetti dinners.
His father was in the Air Force and lived most of his teenage years in Japan and Germany before settling down in Bellevue in 1970. He graduated from Bellevue High School in 1971 and Bellevue University with a degree in Business Administration in 1981. He worked at Union Pacific Railroad for 31 years but his passion is volleyball. Beginning in the 1990’s he’s held volleyball clinics for St. Mary’s School & other parochial schools even while working at UPRR and teaching/coaching at Bellevue College. He freely gave of his time to provide clinics in the summer and fall for many years to both players and coaches. Doug was a co-chair for St. Mary’s School’s “Sports Committee” first silent auction fundraiser with Dr. Bob Saniuk and Theresa Hupf. He was an asst. student volleyball coach at UNO; Head volleyball coach at Wayne State College; Bellevue University and at Louisville HS. He was the volleyball coordinator for St. Mary’s School for many years
He coached St. Mary’s School’s volleyball teams for grades 3-8 th for many years with his last year being the 2024-2025 school year. He and Becky organized St. Mary’s School’s50th anniversary of volleyball in Oct. 2022 with 9 original players
and their 1 st coach! He coached our sons’ basketball teams when they were students/athletes at St. Mary’s Installed cabinets and classrooms in the 1990’s which are still used today
When the parish was celebrating its centennial (2021) Doug designed the centennial t-shirts, sweatshirts and ball caps (with Fr. Del’s approval of the design); sold them after Masses for countless weekends until all were sold and then he’d order more. Years ago (1994) Doug was St. Mary’s School’s “Sports Committee” co-chair and started the first silent auction fundraiser (for sports) with Dr. Bob Saniuk and Therese Hupf
He served as Scoutmaster for St. Mary’s Boy Scout Troop 305 for 2 years. He was the chair of St. Mary’s School’s “Building and Grounds Committee for a few years.
Both Doug and Becky were members of the Capital Campaign Cabinet in 2017 when funds were raised for the building of the narthex.
Becky is an active member of ST. Mary’s --her involvement is lengthy and illustrious. Her father (a WW2 veteran) was also in the Air Force. She was born in Frankfurt, Germany in 1953 and lived in New York, Kansas, Alaska, and Indiana before moving to Offutt AFB, Nebraska in 1966. She has been involved with St. Mary’s Cub Scout Pack and Boy Scout Troop since 1986 in various leadership roles from den leader, committee chair, merit badge counselor, troop secretary, Cubmaster, and Asst. Scoutmaster. She is currently the Chartered Organization Rep for both the pack and troop.
Becky taught 4 th grade at St. Mary’s School from for 21 years (1994-2015). After retirement she was a substitute teacher and also volunteered in the
school’s lunch room. One of her proudest accomplishments is the continuation of honoring veterans at the school’s annual Veteran Day assembly. It was an honor to have, years ago,
up to 8 or 9 WW2 veterans in attendance. A few years ago, she added Quilts of Valor” presentations to the assemblies. She and Doug currently assist with St. Mary’s School’s weekly left-over lunch food donating it to local food centers. Along with fellow scouter; parishioner Chris Sjoberg she started St. Mary’s co-ed Venture Crew which had “high adventure” as its theme.
Becky has organized St. Mary’s Scout Sundays for the troop for many years at church.
At St. Mary’s she is a lector, Eucharistic Minister, a Perpetual Adorer; previous secretary for the “School Building and Grounds” committee and for St. Mary’s Ladies Guild; a co-leader of Children’s Liturgy. Becky was honored to serve as St. Mary’s Centennial Chair beginning in the summer of 2019. In order to raise money for the upcoming centennial, she suggested a centennial brick pathway and memorial for the priests that served at St. Mary’s. She also came up with the idea of centennial rosaries, t-shirts and sweatshirts and other various centennial keepsakes. She and her committee did extensive research on the parish’s 100-year history. Working with 3 other centennial committee members a 160-pg. centennial book was created for the parish. Beginning in the fall of 2022 Becky’s idea of creating a history hallway
under the new narthex became a reality in Jan. 2024. Both the centennial book and history hallway are her proudest accomplishments.
Becky enjoys taking photos for both the school and parish which are used for their Facebook posts, for the school yearbook, school bulletin boards and school newsletters. She has also taken photos for 7 weddings – 3 at St. Mary’s Church.
A lover of history she started a stamp club years ago at St. Mary’s School reinforcing history through stamp collecting. One of Doug and Becky’s greatest honors was being selected recipients of the school’s 2018 “Heart of Mary” award! Doug worked at McKenzie Pontiac on 24 th and I-80 after graduation for his first year of
college. In Jan. 1974 he began working at Union Pacific Railroad for 12 years before changing
careers as a college volleyball coach. He was a student asst. volleyball coach for 2 years at
UNO and then 2 years as the head volleyball coach at Wayne State College. He then restarted the volleyball program at Bellevue College serving as head coach for 6 years. Doug then returned to Union Pacific Railroad for 18 years before retiring in 2015 with 31 years of service.
Becky, after graduating from high school in 1971 attended Kearney State College until she married Doug in May 1974. Before marriage; for a short time after marriage, she was the asst. manager at the Phillips 66 gas station/car wash on Ft. Crook Rd. She also worked at McKenzie Pontiac for a while before working for Bellevue Public Schools until Sept. 1979. She was a stay at home for a few years before working at First Tier Bank, Omaha. After living in Wayne Nebraska where Doug was coaching, the family returned to Bellevue where Becky eventually earned her teaching degree from Peru State College in May 1974. She was hired in
Aug. 1974 to teach 4 th grade at St. Mary’s School retiring in May 2015. Doug has always liked cars and has had many – such that we’ve lost count! Years ago, he built not only decks for his family but for friends. His passion was coaching volleyball and though he no longer coaches, he is a fan of Nebraska’s volleyball. Becky has always enjoyed taking photos of family and events. As mentioned above she keeps busy, too busy at times, taking photos for the parish. the school, for weddings and
whenever someone ask her to take pictures. She enjoys learning about and visiting historical sites. Years ago, she organized 2-week summer trips for fellow teachers to see historical sites in Nebraska and South Dakota. Together Doug and Becky enjoy attending College World Series games. We enjoy
traveling mostly by car so that we can stop and see sights along the way. In particular we enjoy
visiting national parks. In our younger days we enjoyed camping with our sons and friends.
