About Kairos Prison Ministry International
Kairos Prison Ministry International (KPMI) is a Christian faith based ministry which addresses the spiritual needs of incarcerated men, women, youth and their families. By sharing the love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ, Kairos hopes to change hearts, transform lives and impact the world. KPMI sprang from the Cursillo movement and is supported by volunteers from the 4th Day movement such as Cursillo, National Episcopal Cursillo, Presbyterian Cursillo, Lutheran Via de Crist, The Upper Room’s Walk to Emmaus, and independently ecumenical Tres Dias as well as volunteers from independent and non-denominational churches. As a ministry, Kairos embraces a diverse group of volunteers working together to fulfill Christ’s call to action in Matthew 25:36.
About Kairos Torch
Children of Incarcerated Parents (CHIP) program a Washington State Pilot is designed to meet the needs of the children of incarcerated parents and is appropriate for children and youth between ages 13 and 21. An experience of this type creates an opportunity to introduce a spiritual journey, which their parent or loved one may also be experiencing while incarcerated. The purpose of the experience is to introduce them to God. The message is that God offers unconditional love and acceptance. Torch is initiated with a three and a half day retreat followed by a comprehensive mentoring program using materials and tools that provide external developmental assets and holistic life skills to enhance the youth’s overall development.
Kairos Torch, started in 1997, is the ministry program that reaches out to incarcerated youth through a two and half day weekend experience. The program strategy is to introduce incarcerated youth to Christian mentoring, recognize the masks they wear and process the value of forgiveness of self and others. The long-term mentoring relationship is characterized by weekly mentoring sessions and monthly reunion meetings. These provide youth another way to look at their life while inside, prepare for life outside, and develop a vision of success upon release. After their commitment has ended, a group Bible Study is offered for those youth interested in continuing their spiritual journey.
