God created day and night and called it good - but did God not also create dusk twilight and dawn? God created land and sea and called it good - but did God not also create marshes and wetlands and mudflats? Genesis 1 is full of these perceived binaries - and our siblings who interpret scripture literally tend to use this to justify that God created humans to be exclusively male or female - and nothing in between.

But what these siblings often miss is that the ancient writers of this text used a literary device called "merism." We use this today, too - "I searched high and low but couldn't find it!" We don't mean that we literally ONLY searched the highest and lowest points, right? Merisms are devices that acknowledge two extremes AND everything in between. "Young and old were in attendance" - meaning people of ALL ages were there.

So, the next time you hear someone say that God only created two binary genders, you can feel free to let them know this is a merism - and just like how there are lots of ways to be "between" day and night, there are lots of ways to be "between" the extremes of "male" and "female." And God made all of it. And called it "good."

Society (and the church) has taught us all sorts of things about what "success" looks like - and some of us work so hard to meet those expectations only to find out that we still feel unfulfilled. At missiongathering, we tend to take a critical look at both the "ladder" and the "wall" in order to find more genuine and authentic meaning and purpose in life.
