"Our songs are not primarily aimed to move us, to center us, or to give us a special experience, but to be a time of joint prayer. The difference between singing a song in worship and reciting a written prayer together is nothing other than adding a melody. Reformed churches are sometimes associated with being overly intellectual, focusing centrally on the sermon. To some degree, a focus on the sermon as the exposition of God's Word as a means of grace is accurate and warranted. On the other hand, once we understand our songs during worship as prayer, we realize that Reformed worship is often proportionately most devoted to prayer."

“Too many Christians are left thinking that the Christian life is a mystical quest. This mistake presumes that God has left us to our own devices as we set out to find him… [But] he has appointed ways that we can trust will lead us to him… The notion that mystical encounters with God provide a surefire, thriving walk with the Lord is a complete myth… Our church practices are not lifeless rituals. Saying that listening to a sermon or spending time in prayer is just a dead ritual is as foolish as saying that eating food is a meaningless ritual - both are needed for life…. The means of grace shape the very form of Christian discipleship. They teach us not to invent our way to God. Rather, we look for him where he has promised to meet us… … Christian, God has not left us to guess where to find him. He has given us concrete means— Word, sacrament, and prayer—so that we have tangible ways of walking with him and being sanctified by him. He marks his community with physical signs and actions so that we might be assured of his promises, have certainty where to encounter him, and, most importantly, receive the Savior through these means by faith.... The Christian life is about God using outward, visible means to shape and strengthen our inner life. External truth is supposed to reshape our internal life according with what is right and good."

"In recent times, however, many evangelical theologians have doubted whether the doctrine of the eternal generation of the Son is indeed taught in Scripture. A principal source of doubt has been the 20th-century scholarly consensus that the Greek word monogenēs does not mean “only begotten.”... In this article, I would like to offer a brief defense of the traditional translation “only begotten.”
