Today’s devotional: Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all His benefits ― Psalm 103:2-5

There are numerous verses in the book of Psalm. The word “praise,” or a version of it (plural, past tense), appears 183 times! Praise through music is generally included in Sunday morning worship services. Some churches stick to 3 or 4 hymns dispersed throughout the service, while others will sing various hymns and songs for the first 20-30 minutes. Then, of course, additional music is sung by a choir.

Our prayers can also be a form of praise, especially when we bring to light the God-sightings or God-winks that we see in our daily lives.

There might be times when it is difficult to praise…when we are seriously ill, lose a loved one, experience a horrific event, etc. However, even in these difficult times we are to praise Him and “remember” His benefits…such as: the gift of His Son and the gift of His Spirit, His unending love, forgiveness of sin, life everlasting, a welcoming and supportive church, affirmations, seeing acts of kindness…and you may add to the list!

Just a few reasons to praise The Lord!

Today’s devotional: My times are in your hands (Psalm 31:15)

I was driving in the slow lane on Route 3 West behind a tractor-trailer. Suddenly, the tractor-trailer braked hard and came to an almost compete stop in the slow lane so that it could slowly navigate a turn to exit. Its trailer blocked my lane for quite a while.

As I sat there in the slow lane like a sitting duck, I looked in my rear-view mirror and saw car after car come up behind me way too fast for my liking before they zoomed into the middle lane to avoid hitting me. I held my breath and prayed to not be hit from behind.

As I was finishing my prayer, not one, not two, but three heavy dump trucks changed from my lane and zipped by me in the center lane. Each dump truck said on their back, “In God We Trust.”

Amen to that! Sometimes we need to reminded that we are always in the good hands of the Lord.

Today’s devotional:”Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled” (Matthew 5:6).

My next door neighbor is in a band. I hear them practicing in his basement now and then. My neighbor plays keyboards in the band. I saw him recently and told him I’d been listening to him and I thought he was really an excellent musician.

He was modest but pleased, and he said, “What I love to do is to listen for the spaces in the music and fill them.”

That’s what God calls on us to do in helping others. With the help of the Holy Spirit, God wants us to identify the places where people are “empty,” where they are in any kind of need. And God wants us to help fill those needs.

God wants to do the same for us, too.

Today’s devotional: Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and set-up a pillar for himself, which is in the King’s Valley. For he said, “I have no son to keep my name in remembrance.” He called the pillar after his own name. And to this day it is called Absalom’s Monument ― II Samuel 18:18

WOW! If you know the anything about Absalom, from this one verse you can see he was a self-centered man! Absalom, a son of David with long flowing hair [2 Samuel 14:25-26], had to erect his own memorial (pillar).

Absalom was riding a mule after his army is defeated; he’s fleeing from King David [his father] and his hair gets caught in the branch of a tree and he is left there dangling. Ironically, this verse comes after his death. It’s a summation of his life…following after his own interests which centered around himself. NOT a great statement as an epitaph!

We do not have an earthly king to follow, for we serve the King of Kings and Lord of Lords! Good deeds and heroic actions done bring honor and praise to Him!

Today’s devotional: And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them (1 John 4:16)

I heard it before I saw it.

“Do you want crackers, sweetheart?”

It was said in such a loving tone by an elderly man who was slowly walking down the supermarket aisle toward an elderly woman. She turned and tenderly smiled at him saying, “Not today, my love.”

I don’t know if they have been together 60+ years or if they have just found love with each other late in life. What was clear was how much they cared for each other in an ordinary moment on an ordinary day.

I think God cares for each of us in the same way. God loves us, provides for us, and wants the best for us. Even in an ordinary moment on an ordinary day.

Today’s devotional: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart” (Colossians 3:23).

Here’s some particularly good advice from Norman Vincent Peale:

To combat that “overwhelmed” feeling, use the old military maxim: Concentrate your forces and attack at the point where you may achieve a breakthrough. Don’t sit around wringing your hands because so many problems and difficulties beset you. Pick out one, break it down into manageable parts, and go after each part in turn.

I’ve been trying to do a better job of applying the idea “Do one thing at a time,” which helps me say focused and calm when I do it, and Dr. Peale’s thought is useful: pick a “one thing” that you can do, that you can get results with, that will give you a victory.

It’s Biblical advice! As Paul says, “This one thing I do…!” (Philippians 3:13).

Today’s devotional: Now, we do speak wisdom among the mature, but not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are perishing. Instead we speak the wisdom of God, hidden in a mystery, that God determined before the ages for our glory. None of the rulers of this age understood it. If they had known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. But just as it is written, “Things that no eye has seen, or ear heard, or mind imagined, are the things God has prepared for those who love Him.” God revealed these to us by the Spirit ― 1 Corinthians 2:6-10a

There are 40 “authors” who physically wrote the Hebrew and New Testament Scriptures; some had a transcriptionists doing the manual recording. If you look at various books, you might sense a writing style peculiar to a given biological “author”.

However, All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness (II Timothy 3:16). In other words, God through the Holy Spirit is the divine author. And, God’s wisdom for us today is contained therein. Open your Bible and read His Word for you today!

Today’s devotional: He has made everything beautiful in its time (Ecclesiastes 3:11)

In the wintertime, my friend’s young granddaughter loves to sit at the window to watch patiently for it to snow. She loves to get all bundled up to play in the outside in the snow.

She also likes springtime. And summer. And autumn. My friend’s granddaughter loves whatever season she’s in.

How wonderful it is to be excited for whatever season we’re in. No matter what season it is outside and no matter what season we’re experiencing in our lives, there is a joy and beauty for us to discover within it. God has made everything beautiful in its time.

Today’s devotional: “I am with you always” (Matthew 28:20).

A man I didn’t know said to me out of the blue, “God is always speaking to us. The problem is, we don’t listen.”

I don’t know why he told me this, but it made me think. Suppose we decide that God is always speaking to us. Even if we substitute the word “communicating” – suppose God is always communicating with us. What difference should that make in our lives?

For me, it would mean a whole different tempo of living – listening, basing my life on awareness of God, staying alert for what God might be saying. It would be a big change. How about you?
