"When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he had sat down, his disciples gathered around him. Then He began to teach them..." ~Matthew 5:1-2

The Sermon on the Mount is Jesus’ most famous moral teaching, found in Matthew 5-7 of the Bible. It details what it means to live as a citizen of God’s kingdom through radical humility, inner purity, authentic faith, and active love for one's neighbors and enemies.

The Beatitudes mark the beginning of Jesus’ classic teaching, the Sermon on the Mount. The Beatitudes are a collection of blessings that upend traditional societal values. Jesus declares the "poor in spirit," the meek, the merciful, and the peacemakers as blessed, emphasizing the Kingdom's values prioritize humility over power.

Did you notice the emphasis on humility? We don’t have to win every argument or, for that matter, engage in every disagreement. We don’t have to be right, nor do we require special attention. We know our place before God. The formula is God first, others second, and I am third. Not always easy, but it is the rules of the game in God’s kingdom.

The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you." ~John 6:53

I am a Catholic. I can’t leave, even if I wanted to. Sure, the church leaves me scratching my head. There are many things that the church has done that leaves me angry, disappointed, and ashamed. I know I am not the only one. That is the risk our Lord took when He left it to us. Humanity is frail, but I am certain of these two main things: One, Christ founded this church. Secondly, He has left us His body and blood. If for nothing else, I cannot, would not, dare not, leave. People may let us down, but Christ will never leave us. He made sure of this by giving us body and blood to nourish us. There is nothing that compares to that.

I hope you believe that. I trust that you do. Therefore, why would we miss this incredible opportunity to receive Jesus? Make Sunday Mass the unshakeable priority. Receive divine nourishment. Preachers come and go, but Jesus never leaves.

"A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents. Calling His disciples to himself, He said to them, 'Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood.'” ~Mark 12:41-44

Here is a sensitive topic. Want to make people uncomfortable? Ask them to give money. The walls go up. We view money as our security. It is our life saver. We fail to be generous, not so much from greed, but from fear. We fear that one day there will not be enough. We fear that what we have given away will come back to haunt us. “If only I held on to it. I would not be in the bind that I am.” These reactions are normal. Money is necessary for ourselves and loved ones. Know what is even more important: trust. Trust that God is enough. Trust that God promises are true. The great challenge is to trust Him with our resources.

Take steps to be generous. Begin with baby steps if necessary. God will provide.
