Founded in 1894, this charming country church is full of character and history. Belle Mina Methodist Church celebrated its 120th anniversary on April 6, 2014. After Thomas Porter Bibb a member of the Methodist Episcopal Society deeded the land for the church and the parsonage to the Trustees of Hillsboro Methodist Episcopal Church, South the property was transferred to the Belle Mina Society of th
e Methodist Episcopal Church, South which quickly charted as a church. Within several years, the Women's Missionary Society raised the funds for the present sanctuary and old bell tower by selling tickets to Ice Cream Socials. In the decades that came, Rev. Claire Purcell, future Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South and founding father of the union that birthed The Methodist Church was appointed to the Mooresville Circuit, a circuit of three churches: Mooresville ME, South, Greenbrier ME, South and Belle Mina ME, South. Bishop Purcell later reminisced that Belle Mina was his families favorite church over his ministry because of the sweet people who regularly attended. This tradition of sweet people being in attendance persists today. A prominent member Judge James Edwin Horton who presided over the Scottsboro Boys Case. Judge Horton attended until after having sacrificed his political career for justice to be brought for the young men wrongly accused in the case he could no longer afford tires for his car but remained active as a home-bound member. Other prominent members included Judge Horton's wife, Anne Hobbs Horton, a suffragist who fought for women's right to vote in North Alabama. History was made in Belle Mina, AL when on Sunday, April 19th, 2015, Belle Mina and Morning Star Churches were merged together as one Methodist Church. Morning Star, a predominately and historically African American church was founded in 1906 and celebrates its 120th anniversary October 19th, 2024.
