"This is the day which the Lord hath made: we will rejoice and be glad in it." Psalm 118:24
Good morning to you! A blessed Lord's Day, whether you are worshipping in your vehicle, your recliner, bed, or otherwise. A mature, Spiritual Christian is NOT dependent on the congregating of Believers in order to worship. While fellowship is a plus, you should be able to worship where you are!
Who's holding your hand? Several circumstances have brought this question to my mind this week. Let me relate them to you, and please bear with me.
When I was a young feller, I would hold my girlfriend's hand as a way of being possessive, and telling the other guys, "back off Buster, she's mine!" Later, after we had said the "I do's" I held her hand for the expression of love and commitment that I felt for my wife. Even today, that simple gesture means so very much to her and I as we walk, whether down the drive or in the store. I'm no longer worried about the possessiveness but the hand-holding is for her and I alone. The reason has changed. It's a gesture of love and trust.
Now let me change the subject just a little.
As most of you know, I love my Air Horn. It's my way of expressing my "road rage" without being too aggressive and mean. But my CB radio also is a tool for me to express myself, and sometimes nobody knows whose expression it is!
A frustration for truck drivers, and probably for some of you who drive the freeways often, is when a truck gets in the fast lane (hammer lane to us) and doesn't go anywhere! He just takes up space! Never gets around to passing the other vehicle, just stays out there! This may last for miles! UUGGHH!!! At that point, I grab my radio mike and ask (very politely, I might add) "are you gonna pass that guy or just sit there and hold his hand?" As you can imagine, I sometimes get an impolite response, and sometimes they complete the pass. Sometimes an accusation of "hand-holding" has a negative thought attached!
The second circumstance I would relate is from talking to a dear Grandma this week. She is concerned about some medical procedures that she has to undergo this coming week. Obviously, she is very apprehensive. I shared with her the Scripture from John chapter 10, verse 28. Read that for yourself, but let me paraphrase for you.
Jesus told His Disciples, "I give unto my sheep Eternal Life, and they shall never perish, and NO one is able to pluck them from My hand!" That simple verse (one of my favorites) is Jesus saying to me "I got this!" ( I know, not good English) But: in the next verse, He assures us that His Father, who is greater than all, will never allow anyone to be removed from HIS ( the Father's) hand!
While our concerns ( and worries ) are certainly reasonable, Jesus is telling us to trust Him. He's holding our hand. Part of that "hand-holding" is to assure the other person that "I'm here if you begin to fall, I've got you."
We are a Nation of DIY'ers. (do-it-yourself'ers) My Father isn't interested in us "doing it ourselves." He has a will for us, ( Romans 12:1-2) and it is Perfect, whatever it is. We must learn to trust, more easily said than done!
Part of that trusting is "casting." I Peter 5:7 says "casting all your care upon Him, for He careth for you." I can't hold hands unless I remove my hand from my pocket, and place it in her hand. I can't expect the Lord to "hold my hand" as long as I hold back in fear and distrust. I MUST commit to the relationship, if I expect to be supported and comforted during my walk with Him. ( I forgot to mention the warmth which is felt as a result of hand-holding) However, if I withdraw my hand from that relationship (take back my "casting my cares"), I lose the trust which I had while holding hands, and I regain the fear that I once gave away. I'm back where I started.
Like many of us, Grandma is concerned about tomorrow. Jesus told His Disciples in Matthew 10:29-31, (paraphrased again) "My Father knows of every sparrow that falls, and you are of more value than many sparrows." You are important to Him! He gave His Son for you, and prepared a home for you! You are everything to Him!
Ira Stanphill wrote these words, as follows:
"I don't know about tomorrow, I just live from day to day;
I don't borrow from it's sunshine, for its skies may turn to gray,
I don't worry o'er the future, for I know what Jesus said;
And today I'll walk beside Him, for He knows what is ahead.
Many things about tomorrow
I don't seem to understand
But I know Who holds tomorrow
and I know Who holds my hand."
So; who's holding your hand?
Please keep Vern, Cleo, Tena and their families in your prayers this week.
We hope to see you soon!
As Paul Harvey used to say; Good Day!
