If you ever went to your grandmama's place in the country and the yard was bare dirt, swept smooth as a kitchen floor, you might have figured she just could not get grass to grow. She could. She did not want it. 🧹

That swept yard came across the water with our people. In much of West and Central Africa the ground around the house was kept bare and swept into patterns, and folks carried that tradition straight into the Georgia lowcountry and the red clay hills. A homemade brush broom of gallberry or dogwood, and every single morning somebody swept that yard clean. It kept snakes where you could see them, kept fire from creeping up to the house, gave the children a hard clean place to play, and let anybody passing know that proud people lived there.

For generations that yard was the outdoor room where folks shelled peas, told stories, and caught the evening breeze. Then grass lawns became the thing everybody was supposed to want, and we got taught to feel shame about the bare yard, like it meant we could not afford better. It never meant that. It meant Africa was still in the broom. 🤎 Did your people keep a swept yard?
