A Mother’s Influence
Pray that God would help you see opportunities to invest in young hearts and point them toward Christ.
Proverbs 22:6

If someone asked us to name the greatest and most influential people, we’d probably think of presidents or leaders of industry because their decisions shape the world. But who shaped them? It’s likely their mothers played a key role in their success.

When a woman is in the process of changing diapers, wiping noses, and settling squabbles, raising children may not seem like important work. However, God has given mothers the responsibility of shaping those young lives and teaching the importance of knowing and loving Him. Timothy is an example of how women can impact the faith of the next generation (2 Tim. 1:5).

If you’re a mom, you have tremendous influence in the lives of your children. There’s no way to know how God will use them in the future. But whatever His plans may be, you can equip your sons and daughters by determining to spend time with them each day, reading and teaching them God’s Word.

Perhaps you don’t have children or your children are grown. You can still have an impact! Look for those to whom you can be a spiritual parent, teaching and loving them as Christ did. When they see you modeling godly character or trusting the Lord in the midst of trials, they will want to know and love God as you do. That’s a wonderful way to support the next generation.

Walking With Jesus in a Storm
Unrealistic expectations can keep us from seeing Jesus' faithful love and tender care.
Matthew 14:22-33

It was night. There were high winds and crashing waves. For the disciples, who were on the sea in a small boat, the situation had become a crisis—and Jesus was not with them. He was on the mountainside praying.

In the storm, perhaps the disciples thought Jesus had forgotten them. But He knew exactly where they were and what they were experiencing. Since Jesus is omniscient, He knows our situation at every moment. No darkness can hide us; no trial can obscure His vision. We are always seen, known, and understood!

Jesus sought out the disciples, and He will do the same for us. At first, however, the Twelve didn’t realize who it was they saw walking on water. Jesus often does not come in the way that we expect. Our ideas of how He works can make us wonder where He might be and blind us to how near He actually is.

Experiencing Jesus’ presence in hard times can teach us precious truths. During an earlier experience on the water, the disciples saw both Jesus’ trust in God and His authority over nature (Matt. 8:23-26). Through the storms, they learned who Jesus was and what He could do. Let’s pray for spiritual eyes to discern the Lord’s presence. Then, may we listen for His voice and obey (John 10:27).

Serving Christ
Jesus came to serve others, and He calls us to do the same.
Matthew 25:34-40

Stop for a moment and consider the purpose of your life. Are you living to pursue your own interests or success? Is your energy spent only on those things that bring you comfort or security? Perhaps your ambition is to change the world for the better.

All these aims—even the last one, which sounds so selfless—are futile and without lasting value unless the underlying goal is to serve Christ. As Jesus’ followers, we should model our life after His. And Matthew 20:28 tells us that even the Lord “did not come to be served, but to serve.”

Yet sometimes we can feel overwhelmed when we hear about great things other believers achieved when they responded to their calling. With God on his side, David led great armies into war. How could anything we do compare with that?

But God’s call for each person is unique. He’ll provide the situation, words, and ability so we can achieve what He wants done. Remember, He makes the difference—and we’re blessed to be used by Him, even if our part looks small (John 6:9-12).

Are you demonstrating your love for the heavenly Father by serving others? As Christians, we should all live in such a way that every evening we can say to Him, “Lord, in the best way I knew how, I attempted to serve Your purpose today.”

How to Rekindle the Fire
Our spiritual condition matters—for us and everyone in our circle of influence.
Luke 10:26-28

The Lord created us to live passionately for Him—not only for the joys we will experience in a relationship with the Creator but also for the benefit to those around us. Just as the warmth and beauty of flames draw people toward a hearth, God uses our passion to draw others to Himself (Matt. 5:16).

So we must be careful not to let our fervor fade. Thankfully, the indwelling Holy Spirit nudges believers who start to head in the wrong direction. If you sense this happening, you can take several steps to realign yourself with Him.

First, evaluate where you are spiritually—ask God whether your fire has dwindled to embers. Second, acknowledge any distance you’ve allowed to separate you from your heavenly Father, and repent. Third, refocus your attention on Jesus, and meditate on how He teaches His followers to live. Spend quality time in Scripture daily, asking the Lord to speak to you through His Word. Cry out earnestly, seeking God’s guidance and wisdom. Fourth, rely upon the Holy Spirit to guide you back to an intimate and exciting relationship with the Father. Finally, love and serve God by worshipping Him and loving others.

If your spiritual passion has diminished, ask the Lord to help you renew it. Living closely with Him is well worth the effort.
