When are we like Asa?
About 900 years before Jesus came, Asa was the king of Judah.
Asa did that which was good and right in the eyes of Yahweh, his God. 3 He removed the foreign altars and high places, broke down the stone pillars, and cut down the Asherahs. 4 And he commanded Judah to seek Yahweh, the God of their ancestors, and to keep the law and the commandment. 2 Ch 14:2–4.
And Asa had an army of three hundred thousand from Judah, bearing shields and spears, and two hundred and eighty thousand from Benjamin, who carried shields and drew bows. All of these were mighty warriors of strength. 2 Ch 14:8
Zerah the Cush*te came out against them with an army of a thousand thousands and three hundred chariots. 2 Ch 14:9.
Asa was a righteous King who, for 35 years, had either total peace or victory in battle. He did right with Yahweh, destroyed idolatry, and commanded the people to follow God’s law. Asa had a great army, but when one million warriors (Zerah the Ethiopian) were going to wage war on him, he sought God, got the victory, and captured many valuable items and animals. Even people from Israel joined Judah because he followed the Lord.
Only in his 36th year did he begin to depend on other things rather than God. He resorted to bribes using temple money. He imprisoned the prophet and killed people. He trusted physicians instead of God. It didn’t take long, and diseases ended up killing him.
So, what gives? After so many years of righteous living and instituting significant reforms, he lost his faith. How does that happen? Perhaps with so much peace, he lost his closeness to God and his sharp edge. When I read his account, it made me feel sad! It showed that we must always be diligent to follow the Lord, even if we are comfortable. Asa left a good heritage, at least, when Jehoshaphat followed after him.
In the last few years, there have been too many similar stories. Quite a few leaders and pastors have fallen. Most were well-established with great churches, and they wrote many Christian books. I wonder if that is happening all over the world.
The lesson should be obvious. We must always press into God and remain loyal to Him. We must fight the world’s influence on us.
