The unity of the Church must not be limited to the members of the Church who still live on earth. The Church is the Mystical Body of Christ and, as such, it includes not only the living, but also the departed. Within its unity are the heroes of past conflicts – the Martyrs, the Confessors, the Virgins, the faithful men and women and children who have departed this life and the faith and fear of Christ, the Evangelists, the Apostles, the Holy Mother of the Lord. Our idea of the Church’s unity is a weakened and narrowed and impoverished if we do not remember those who have passed into the unseen world, who are bound to us by the links which are the more strong because they are undiscerned by the senses and are spiritually real.
