"Leave your simple ways, and live, and walk in the way of insight." Proverbs 9:6

The other day I listened to the creator of Veggie Tales speak to a group of pastors concerning the way we deliver and understand the Gospel. He asked the question, "can the Gospel be understood by a third grader?" As I listened to this man speak I realized how difficult we tend to make the basics of salvation. I would venture to say that there are few in our churches today who could actually explain the Gospel in a way that a third grader would understand which means there are a lot of people out there who are struggling to understand the Gospel themselves. In Proverbs 9:6 we are encouraged to leave our "simple ways" this does not mean we should all become great theologians but rather we should move past simple thinking and as Paul says in Hebrews 5:12 move towards the meat and potatoes of scripture. Have you ever heard someone say, "ignorance is bliss?" The problem with this statement when it comes to the Gospel is found just after the "and" in this verse, by staying in ignorance we don't have life. You cannot truly live the fullness of your faith if you do not dive into the word of God. This week I encourage you to write out an explanation of the Gospel, so a third grader could understand it. Spend some time in prayer asking God to give you a desire for the meat and potatoes of your faith and his word.

Leave your simple ways, and live, and walk in the way of insight.”

John 6:14
"When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, "this is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!"

As I read this passage I tried to think back to the moment I realized Jesus was who I needed as King of my life. I was 19 years old, fighting my past and future when I realized that although I had confessed Jesus as Lord, I had never really surrendered my life to him. I only gave lip service to the one I knew I should worship but I had no idea or intention of letting him lead. But on this night, the Spirit hounded me and chased me until I couldn't run anymore and I experienced something that I had desperately been looking for, unconditional love and acceptance. It was at this moment I saw the "sign" just as those who experienced the miracle found in John 6 and I believed with my whole heart and had faith. It was this experience that allowed me to cry out, "This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!" It was this experience through the Holy Spirit's persistence and leading that allowed me to have faith and make him Lord of my life. This week I encourage you to write down your conversion experience. What led up to it, how have you changed since, how did you feel when you confessed your faith? If you are courageous enough, I ask you to write your experience as a response to this post. Please remember you don't need to have a "rags to riches" story for your conversion experience to be powerful, it only needs to be sincere and from the heart.

When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, “This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!”
