The old warriors, whose hearts were in their work, suffered and sacrificed to build and perpetuate this house of prayer and the rich heritage which we now enjoy. A man, who felt the call of God, preached from house to house and organized a
small group of followers into a church. Sampson White of Lynchburg, Virginia, and Mr. William Brown of Bedford, Virginia. They worked as a congregation, along
with other churches, with a Reverend Jones from Charlemont, Virginia as their preacher. Washington Street Baptist Church was organized October 14, 1866 in an old school house with sixty-five members. Their contributions and services to the Kingdom Building of our Lord laid the foundation for our growth and development. On August 12,1876, Mr. and Mrs. Burnell Robertson sold a certain parcel of land on Washington Street to the trustees of the Colored Baptist Congregation worshipping at Liberty, Virginia. This parcel of land was purchased "for and in consideration of the sum of one dollar in hand," to be used as a place of public worship and to be held by the trustees and their successors for worship and not otherwise for any other purpose. The church was burned and rebuilt during the 1930's. The focus was not just to build a new church but an environment in which the Kingdom of God would flourish. There have been twenty-one pastors throughout Washington Street's 145 years of history. Reverend Henry A. Henderson, our current pastor has been with us for 42 years. We thank God for him and pray that God will continue to bless him and his family as we continue our Christian journey. Shall we continue on and leave this legacy to unborn generations? Yes! may we never forget the faith in God and perseverance of the saints who used what they had, by God's grace, to provide us with the God given church we now have. September 2010
