Powerful rulers often think less of people below them and order their respect instead of earning it. Jesus explains that leaders must be servants first. The disciples were not all-powerful over God's people; they were spiritual leaders who served by teaching, baptizing, and carrying out other works of the Lord. We see power struggles that cause war, broken families, and fragmented churches. When chosen as spiritual leaders, we understand that we are servants to those we are leading to the Lord. We will serve them by ministering to their needs and encouraging them to strengthen their faith.

It's our human nature to come up with plans, thoughts, and goals for the future. But we need to realize God is the only one who truly knows what's best for us. When you have plans you would like to make, or actions you need to take about a particular decision, make sure that you go to God first.

We lack confidence when it comes to sharing the Good News. We are concerned we won't say the right words or become afraid of rejection. We must remember that God makes all things possible. We only need to lean on the Holy Spirit for guidance, and He will direct our path toward opportunities to minister to the world. He will create within us the ability to invite others to discover the way to salvation.

We all have a tendency to complain sometimes. When we focus on what we don’t have instead of what we’ve been given, complaining becomes all too easy. But God hears our grumblings, and He is prepared to meet our needs. And when He does, we are reminded of His faithfulness and He is glorified by the good work that He does for us.

Dear God, I thank you for the parents and guardians You have given me who are concerned about You and Your will for their lives and my life. Father, may you help me to pay attention to their instructions and their advice. I desire to honor my parents because I know it brings you honor too. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

What do you do when someone "sins" against you? No one goes through life without being hurt by someone. Most of the time, the person causing the pain doesn't even realize it. Sometimes the person truly intends the pain. But, what do we do about it? In this gospel passage, Jesus tells his disciples to first go to the person and keep it between the two of them. In this way, the person who has offended the other can explain his/her intent, apologize for any pain caused, and the relationship can be maintained. But what happens when the first thing someone does is go and tell all his/her friends and family members about it? There can be resentment against the guilty party that could be unfounded. I have known of women who have complained and complained about the treatment they have received from spouses or children, bosses or coworkers, and never confronted the person directly. I'm not talking about abuse or abusive situations, but normal slights and offenses that can occur with anyone with whom you spend a lot of time. You then meet the "offending" person at a gathering and everything is "fine." You may still feel a bit of anger at the one who caused your friend or family member such anguish. But the person explains that she finally sat down with the offending person and had a heart to heart talk and everything got ironed out. If those people had first spoken to the offender, it would have been settled a lot sooner and no one else would have been dragged into the argument. Obviously, Jesus also laid out some ground rules if the situation could not be so easily solved. Bring along a couple of witnesses to the confrontation and then if nothing can be resolved bring it to a higher authority. This gospel gives us a good opportunity to think about our own actions and how we can better resolve conflicts in the future.

Lord Jesus, you didn't come into the world to be served but to serve and to give your life a ransom for many. Help us to learn true humility from your example left to us in Scripture. You always submitted to the Father, even to the point of enduring the pain and agony of the cross. Help us to endure all things with joy that God has made our lot to bear, knowing that it will turn to our benefit in the end. Amen.
