"Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer." Romans 12:12

Our sermon today is entitled "If It weren't for People." Faith can feel simple when we are enjoying morning coffee and reading the Bible, but living out that faith with others is where patience, humility, and love are tested. How should we live together as God's family when conflict arises?

In Romans 12, Saint Paul shows us how to pursue harmony with one another. Verse 12 offers a clear and faithful summary: rejoice in the hope we have in Jesus Christ, remain patient in hardship, and stay constant in prayer. As we do, we remember that God is at work in us and around us, even through the challenges of life together.

This lesson applies to whatever we are facing. God invites us to meet conflict with hope, patience, prayer, and a desire for harmony. May we live that way with grateful hearts for our Savior.

"Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, “Children, do you have any fish?” They answered him, “No.” He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, because of the quantity of fish. That disciple whom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment, for he was stripped for work, and threw himself into the sea. The other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards[a] off.
When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place, with fish laid out on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, 153 of them. And although there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” Now none of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish. This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead." John 21:4-14

The miraculous catch and the last earthly meal recorded in the Gospels. We know this one but we hear it anew this morning as Rev. Todd shares it in the light of our role as Children of God. At this breakfast, Jesus shows His beloved disciples that they are SEEN, SOOTHED, SECURED & CELEBRATED.

Jesus calls out from Shore..."Children". Jesus sees his disciples and reaches out with a term of endearment and love. Jesus soothes and restores Peter after the three denials. Jesus then secures Peter expressing His Love. Peter was always trying to prove his loyalty to Jesus but security in God begins with God's devotion to us. Jesus ends by celebrating Peter as a trusted disciple. His conversation with Peter ends with His final earthly words, "Follow Me." It is an invitation of empowerment and trust.

This powerful lesson is true for all of us as Children of God. God SEES us and offers SOOTHING comfort. We are SECURE in God's devotion to us. God CELEBRATES us. We have all been invited to take up the Cross and follow Jesus. Jesus' steadfast love allows us to lay down our lives for others. We can ask that His will be done in our lives. We are secure in the knowledge that WE belong to Jesus.
