Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Beaufort

Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Beaufort An open, liberating community in which to grow and connect in the Lowcountry. Services 10am Sundays.

A flame within a chalice (a wide-lipped stemmed cup), like that which you can see at the top of this page, represents the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) and is a symbol of the Unitarian Universalist (UU) faith. Hans Deutsch, an Austrian artist, first brought together the chalice and the flame as a Unitarian symbol during his work with the Unitarian Service Committee during World War II.

To Deutsch, the image had connotations of sacrifice and love. Unitarian Universalists today have many different interpretations of the image. To many, the cup represents religious community, while the flame represents ideas including the sacrificial flame, the flame of the spirit, and more.

Our lives are often full of things we have "got to" do--tasks or obligations or necessities. How many of those "got to" things are intertwined with the gifts of being alive, and does it help to think of them as things we also "get to" do?

On this Sunday before Memorial Day it is important for Americans to remember and honor those who have sacrificed their lives and their futures in military service to our country. Is it not also the responsibility of "We the People" to demand that our leaders and representatives make just and wise decisions before committing the lives of courageous young Americans to combat and endangering the lives of citizens of other nations?

The title of this week's service, "An Atheist, Humanist and Theist Walk Into A Bar . . ." sounds like a joke, but that was just to get your attention. What the service will contain is a dialogue between three such people, politely discussing the unknown about God, ethics, morality, and such. The three actors, Mary Mallet, David Grim and myself, will play these roles (and remember this is acting, and not necessarily what each of us believe). Are you curious? If you need more motivation, come and hear Mary Lara's song that she wrote for Barb Banus (the high bidder for Mary's auction item). One more thing, be brave and bring a friend, there won't be anything not to like.

Tomorrow! This Sunday is Mother's Day and our annual Flower Communion service, so bring a flower with you to put into a common vase before leaving with a flower different from the one you bring! (Don't worry, if you don't have a flower to bring, we'll have extras--you don't need to stay home!) Did you know that the first Mother's Day proclamation before Mother's Day became a recognized holiday was by Unitarian Julia Ward Howe, and it was an anti-war Mother's Peace Day proclamation? Let's celebrate Mother's Day with a focus on peace and with the flower communion ceremony created by another Unitarian, Norbert Capek.

This Sunday is the birthday of Laura Towne, a Unitarian from New England who came to St. Helena Island in 1862, where she established the Penn School to provide education to formerly-enslaved people in this region who had just been set free. What was her legacy, and how are we called to respond to it today?

As a second sermon in our Abolition Study/Action Issue series, we will look at the hidden nature of incarceration, an example of a wider issue of how we respond to or even know about suffering and injustices that are "out of sight, out of mind." How do we become aware of problems in the world we don't see, and how do we keep from being overwhelmed when we do?

Join us for our first 5th Sunday of the year by our Social & Environmental Justice Activists (SEJ)! Join us this Sunday as our resident Master Gardener, Jay Weidner, gives a talk about the coming of spring and how it awakens our connections with the natural world and contributes to our overall well-being. In Jay's words, "Let this season bring energy and cheer as we rejoice and celebrate the renewal of the world." Also, during the service there will be a blessing and guided meditation for the Spring Equinox from Stephen Burton of ASIC!

War is a failure to live up to the potential of shared humanity. What do we do when our own nation is the aggressor in war? How do we understand war and peace as Unitarian Universalists?
