What exactly is GOSIP & SLANDER?
In the Church, it's disguised as, "a prayer request."
Or when a conflict cannot be settled, it is going to a 3rd person who was not involved and "asking them to talk to the other person."
If you even listened to the tale, you are as guilty for listening to gossip as is the person spreading it. Even if you think you will be the peacemaker. (This is outside of a Matthew 18 scenario.)
The Ultra Orthodox Jews believe that all of creation was formed by God's mouth speaking and his words. And since man is made in the image of God, they believe that the Temple itself no longer stands because of man's mouth and evil words.
What do the Scriptures say about gossip and slander?
James 1:26
Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless.
Leviticus 19:16
You shall not go around as a gossip among your people, and you are not to act against the life of your neighbor [with slander or false testimony]; I am the Lord.
Proverbs 11:9, 13
[9] With his mouth the godless man destroys his neighbor, But through knowledge and discernment the righteous will be rescued.
[13] He who goes about as a gossip reveals secrets, But he who is trustworthy and faithful keeps a matter hidden.
Proverbs 16:28
A perverse man spreads strife, And one who gossips separates intimate friends.
Proverbs 17:9
Whoever would foster love covers over an offense, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends.
Proverbs 18:8
The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to the inmost parts.
Proverbs 18:21
The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.
Proverbs 26:24-26
[24] He who hates, disguises it with his lips, But he stores up deceit in his heart. [25] When he speaks graciously and kindly [to conceal his malice], do not trust him, For seven abominations are in his heart. [26] Though his hatred covers itself with guile and deceit, His malevolence will be revealed openly before the assembly.
So, next time somebody wants to tell you about someone else or you feel the need to talk about someone else when they are not present, reconsider the sin involved.
That goes for me, too.
That's why David said,
"Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer."
Psalms 19:14
