Jessica Jean Smith Wilber, passed away on July 23, 2026, in Poughkeepsie, New York, at the age of 75, following complications from a cerebral stroke. She was born on October 20, 1950, in Willow, and was a native and lifelong area resident. Jessica was a graduate of Onteora Central Schools and SUNY Ulster, and she carried the values of her community with her throughout her life. Those who knew her will remember a woman of quiet strength, steady kindness, and deep devotion to the people and animals entrusted to her care.
For many years, Jessica served as a home health primary caregiver to many elderly friends and neighbors. She gave generously of her time and talents, helping others remain in the comfort of their own homes and offering reassurance, companionship, and dependable support. Many families came to consider Jessica a part of their own family, and that bond reflected the warmth and sincerity she brought to every relationship. Her care was not limited to people, as she was also a pet sitter for hundreds of animals and was known as a dedicated and devoted pet lover.
Jessica had a remarkable gift for making things with her hands and with her heart. She was a skilled and prolific knitter and seamstress who created numerous items for family, friends, and charitable fundraisers. She also enjoyed reading, tending to her flower and vegetable gardens, baking delicious homemade goods, and spending time at her farmhouse in Olivebridge. In all that she did, she was remembered as someone with a wellspring of caring for others, and her life was marked by generosity, patience, and grace.
She was a member of the Kings Daughters of the Shady Methodist Church, a service and fellowship group that reflected her spirit of community and compassion. Her faith and fellowship were important parts of her life, and she found joy in being of service to others in both large and small ways. Jessica’s presence was a comfort to many, and her steady, nurturing nature left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
Jessica is survived by her daughter, Wendy, and her husband, Matthew Trojak; her son, Dustin, and his wife, Kathleen Barry Wilber; her grandchildren, Vanessa, Cole, Logan, and Addison; and her very special friend, Emma. She is also survived by her sisters: Sharon Smith-Delisle (Richard), Sarah Wilber (Harry), and Susan Sass (James), as well as her feline companions, Pepper and Lila. Her family and friends will forever cherish her memory and the example she set through a life lived with compassion, humility, and love.
Her legacy will live on in the countless lives she touched through her caregiving, her friendship, her craftsmanship, and her unwavering devotion to others. Jessica Jean Smith Wilber will be remembered with deep affection and gratitude by all who were fortunate enough to know her. A Memorial Visitation will be held on Thursday July 30th from 5pm to 7pm at the E. B. Gormley Funeral Home 87 Main Street Phoenicia.
