This delightful word entered English via Yiddish (tshatshke), which ultimately derives from an obsolete Slavic or Polish root (czaczko) meaning a trinket or toy.

⚖️ Hebrew Word of the Week: Tzedek — צֶדֶק ⚖️

Tzedek means justice, righteousness, or doing what is right.

In Judaism, justice is more than recognizing when something is unfair. It's about helping to make things right. As the Torah teaches: “Tzedek, tzedek tirdof” — “Justice, justice shall you pursue” (Deuteronomy 16:20). 📖

Tzedek reminds us that each of us has a role in building a kinder, stronger, and more just world. 💙

We are heartbroken by the shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, where children were among the victims. Our hearts are with the families and the entire community.

Jewish tradition teaches that “to take a life is to destroy an entire world” (Mishnah Sanhedrin 4:5). As the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism⁠ reminds us, gun violence violates our belief in the sanctity of human life.

It is frightening how routine these shootings have become. At Congregation Mishkan Or, we invest significant resources in security, especially to protect our children. We wish it weren’t necessary.

We cannot allow this to become normal. Our Jewish values demand action to protect lives and prevent gun violence.

For anyone struggling with this news, our clergy are here to listen and offer support.
May the memories of those lost be a blessing.
